Louisville's Carbon Footprint

by Michael Sell » Thu May 29, 2008 12:41 pm

Interesting AP story this morning, with even more interesting (in a sad way) replies on the CJ's website (give it 10 minutes and it'll load up). How so many people can be so proud of driving excessively/too fast, leaving the lights on unnecessarily, etc. is stunning. Since when is it considered rebellious to be proud of a high LGE bill and gas costs? "That'll show the lib'rul media. I'm gonna drive my Hummer around 265 for a few hours at 85 mph and leave the lights, tv, and computer all on while I do it." Oh, and Robert, that isn't a suggestion.

The replies to the CJ stories never cease to amaze me. People are really mean and angry.

And bitter. ;)

Bear in mind that the more Gannett dumbs down its content, the dumber is its core audience.

This was just an AP story (of course Gannett truncates these stories to thumbnails of the actual content) that ran all over the country. Of course, coal plays a major role in this for the state/region, but there certainly are habits that are likely not sustainable going forward unless one is wealthy enough to afford the increasing prices. It's a conservation issue for some, but a $ issue for everyone. Who knows what Limbaugh/Hannity/O'Reilly said today about the story, but half these people are probably just parroting. I don't know which is worse--the proud ignorance or the mean-spiritedness of the CJ's postings.

I almost never read the reader comments after an online article. They do not represent a cross-section of the majority of the public at large, but rather a cross-section of the completely dysfunctional minority who have struggled all their lives to be heard as the world has passed them by (I suppose they'd be considered "losers" in the game of life). Those comment sections bring out the meanness in the meanest, and they foster discord and divisiveness rather than civil conversation.

I believe one of the thing that makes the carbon footprint of regional cities look so bad is that much of the region's electricity is generated from coal fired plants. The actual level of energy consumed may not be the driver of your carbon footprint as much as you think.
