One place that need's a smoking ban: Swifty's

by Bedford Crenshaw » Thu Apr 24, 2008 3:01 am

People on this board seem to have the impression I like to complain and rashly let my feelings known. Well, one thing I kept my tongue in my mouth for I should do so any longer. Tuesday night at 9:30, while filling both of the family's cars at the Jeffersonville Swifty's on 10th Street, as they were the only one's nto rising the price yet, I saw the station's sole employee smoking a cigarette WHILE PUMPING GAS!!! Needless to say, I was glad to get out of there. I remember the worker commenting on it that he really didn't care what was thought of it.

If you hear about an explosion at a Jeff gas station, at least you know where.

That is SO scary, Bedford. That's where I pay 90% of my gasoline, though the Dairymart on 8th Street is consistently 1 to 2 cents cheaper than anywhere else in town. Swifty is more convenient and faster. If you got the fellow's name or description, you might want to report this to corporate. It's a pretty significant safety issue.

Well, he was the only employee I saw working then, so it shouldn't be that hard to find out who it was.

While it's a tacky thing to do, as evidenced by the reactions here it isn't dangerous. The ignition temp of gasoline is higher than that of a lit cigarette.

If you throw a lit cigarette into a bunch of gas, nothing happens. Except that the cigarette is put out.

I used to pump gas at Cubert's Exxon in Shelbyville and can tell you that gas will light. While gassing up a pickup with the filler by the drivers door (I think it was a 60s Chevy model), my co-worker gave the guy a light. There was a whoosh and immediately an impressive flame about 10 feet tall. We found out soon thereafter that the fire extinguisher was empty, then just turned off the pump and it went out. The police were there, but stayed away until it was safe, then came over and told us we shouldn't smoke around the gas pumps.
