Nice article, but their fact-checkers were working from a mighty old atlas:
Population: 248,762

Hey, good catch! That number certainly won't make us in the list as the 16th largest US city!

You think it's all right for a major newspaper to use eight-year-old data in a story? Yes, the decennial census was in 2000, but the U.S. Census Bureau itself makes annual estimates readily available. It took me about 90 seconds to find the spreadsheet with Louisville's July 1, 2006 population: 554496 (excluding all the mini-cities).

Here's the download page:
U.S. Census Bureau, cities & towns, Places over 100,000: 2000 to 2006

Thanks to the exclusion of the small cities, by the way, we rank not as 16th but a mere 27th, between Denver and Las Vegas.

wow, Louisville's population doubled in 8 years. That explains the explosion of McMansion development in the east end.

I don't see any problem in a paper relying on a cenus count instead of an estimate. What irks me is all the manipulation of the data. Some days we are one of the biggest cities in America, some days we're just a small city in Kentucky. I wish someone would just make up their mind and decide whether we are 16th or 46th biggest city.

Louisville's population did not double. The increase in population is an artifact of merger.
