Question for Mac users

by Daren F » Tue Apr 15, 2008 10:26 am

I drank the Kool Aid a little over three years ago and bought an iMac and (for the most part) have been very happy. In the last year, I have noticed that certain sites such as Slate.com and weatherchannel.com might crash Safari after a few minutes. Not a big deal . . . flip over to Firefox for those sites and everything is fine. My three year protection plan just expired and now everything seems to crash Safari. I can always use Firefox as my main browser, but I would really like to know what is wrong. I am sure that it is the result of an update at some point. I am going to check Apple's message boards and I may call the store at Oxmoor, but I thought I would start here.
Thanks for the help.

I drank the kool-aid a few weeks ago and have been pretty happy with my decision. Other then just learning how to use it, I've had no problems whatsoever. They did update their operating system and it is supposed to be much better then the old from what I understand but I'm not sure if that would affect Safari or not. I'm not much help, I know.

I have never used anything but Mac and haven't had any problems at all. I should say not the problems you mentioned.

My home laptop is a Mac and I love it. I've had it about 3 years. Safari works great but for me Firefox seems to run real slow. I usually don't fool with it.

An update to Safari recently came out so you might try either upgrading if you haven't yet or downgrading if you did. Outside of that do you have any add ons or mods to Safari?

No add ons or mods . . . as far as updates, I do them whenever I receive an alert that one is available. I was always hesitant to do Windows updates in my PC days, because it was always a gamble if it would cause more problems or not. This is my first "real" problem with a Mac.

Try this first, goto the top menu bar where it says Safari and goto Reset Safari and you may want to deselect a few items in this list such as passwords and usernames if you do not remember all your logins on different websites. The main thing you want to do is Clear Cache and possibly Delete Cookies. I doubt this fixes it, but worth a try. If it's always on the same site that it crashes, goto that website after you try this. Sounds more like a Java or Flash problem, you may try to update Flash if its happening on websites that are trying to load video or something like that. Java should get updated when you do your System Updates, so if you keep current with those, you should be fine on that front.

I had this problem for a bit. And clearing the cache fixed it right up.

Thanks Dee Dee! That seems to have worked . . . I tried both of the sites mentioned in the initial post and did not have any problems. I appreciate everyone's help.
