looking for butcher shop

by C. Devlin » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:51 pm

...preferably in southern Indiana. Any recommendations?

And along the same lines, where might I find more out of the ordinary meats (at least by supermarket standards) such as rabbit, quail, etc.

There is a great one just off I-65 in Sellersburg. Preferred Meat. If you search the main forum it was recently discussed.

Thanks Ed. I did a search on this forum thinking I'd just seen something recently, but didn't find anything, so I'll take a look over there.

It's in a newish strip mall facing Hwy. 60 where it crosses Hwy. 311/Charlestown Road. Coming from Washington County toward 65, turn right at the four-way stop by the drug store and then immediately left into the strip's parking lot.

It's taken a few decades, but I always knew growing up in Hamburg would come in handy someday. :D

Thank you, Jeff. That was most helpful.

And we all have to grow up somewhere. :P

You have to check out Preferred Meats is Sellersburg! They are fantastic! Everything is locally raised, organic. They also cut everything on site. Sometimes as you request it. You can also call in the morning, place your order and pick it up on your way home from work. They took orders for fresh Amish turkeys over the holidays and it was the best turkey we have ever had. They also carry Boar's Head products. You have to check them out. You will be very happy you did.

I used to go to The Ole Town Grocery in Downtown Jeffersonville....

They offer packages for your freezer as well as cut to order as long as they have it...

You won't find any dry aged Prime beef there, but for the most part they offer a very good full service butcher counter....

Dan, we LOVE Olde Towne Grocery in Jeffersonville. It's so hard to find "real" butchers anymore that gladly do special cuts, etc. Going in there always puts me in mind of old-timey groceries like we grew up with before the age of "supermarkets".

Did you know that Olde Towne stays in business by supplying groceries to the barges plying up and down the River? They call or fax in their orders as they approach Jeffersonville and the groceries are delivered to them at the river.

They don't have much selection at Olde Towne (1 or 2 brands of most items), but they have a good variety nonetheless. We stop in there a couple of times a month.

Lois
