Today is a "Day of Two 8664 Excoriations" at LouHI

by Steve Magruder » Fri Dec 14, 2007 1:23 pm

Check out the first excoriation.

This one is entitled "The C-J editorial board: We're free to mischaracterize 8664 and its supporters, but do the same to us, even by loose inference, and you'll pay!".

Enjoy. :)

i have a question about 8664?

is it the intent of the 8664 group to build a new stretch of 64 in Indiana?
or to route the 64 traffic to I265 and then to 65??

Yes, 8664 would re-route I-64 along I-265. I-64 already connects to I-265 in Indiana. This reduces the need for I-64 at Louisville's waterfront.

Also, the completed I-265 loop can be used for I-65 through traffic to loop around Louisville. This reduces the need for a second downtown bridge.

Shawn,

8664 would reroute current I-64 downtown through traffic onto what's now 265. Westbound traffic would cross the river from Kentucky into Indiana at the new East End bridge and travel 265 to just above New Albany were it would meet up with the current 64. The plan includes reworking the current 265/64 junction to handle additional traffic.

Eastbound through traffic would do same, except obviously in the opposite direction. After coming down the hill from the Knobs, they'd route onto 265 eastbound, cross the river near Utica, and then meet up with the current 64 in Kentucky.

Essentially, 8664 proposes using 265 as the bypass that it was designed to be.

that seems all well and good
"Essentially, 8664 proposes using 265 as the bypass that it was designed to be."

except that the current 4 lanes of I265, are barely capable of handling the current traffic
(please drive this stretch of interstate during rush hour and see for your self)

additionally a bypass should not become the main artery of an interstate
the bypass as i understand it is designed to alleviate heavy congestion by providing an alternative route for traffic

if we 86 64, where is the alternative route??

it appears that indiana will take the brunt of any traffic problems associated with the 8664 plan

There will be three alternatives:

1) Watterson Expressway
2) The parkway that would replace I-64 at the waterfront
3) The re-routed I-64 over I-265

Obviously, widening of I-265 in Indiana would be called for if 8664 becomes the approach. It might be needed anyway, given that extra traffic may be occurring anyway since the East End Bridge is going up first (apparently).
