Louisville's own Andrew Horne is running for U.S. Senate

by Steve Magruder » Thu Dec 13, 2007 3:35 pm

Page One had the scoop this morning, along with Mr. Horne's YouTube video announcement, possibly a first for Kentucky politics.

Andrew Horne is a colleague and a friend. I can think of no one who would better serve the people of Kentucky in the U.S. Senate.

McConnell has done a lot for the state, but four terms is enough. It's time for a change, and an Iraq war veteran is what we need in Washington to try to find a solution to the quagmire we are in over there.

I think it's fair non-partisan comment to say that after four terms, it's time to give the post to someone else, and I'm not troubled by the loss of McConnell's seniority to the Kentucky delegation.

I don't know Col. Horne, and I have heard good things about him. I'm just a little bit concerned about taking on a career military man for a policy leadership position, though. I got his news release today (twice!) and couldn't help noticing how much and how casually his language hints that he thinks naturally in terms of battle and war, from his "we need foot soldiers" in the campaign to his signing off with "Semper fi."

I'm not trying to be totally anti-military here, but I am concerned, based on all the "lifers" I've ever known, that they're not trained to leadership outside a structured system, and not at all inclined toward thinking outside the box.

With next year shaping up as Armageddon for the Republicans as the nation works out its anger against eight years of Dubya, I'd like to see a healthy crowd of Democratic candidates contend in the primary, and I'm hoping that fear of Mitch's war chest won't scare good people out of that race. (Sorry to see Crit Luallen drop out the other day, for instance.)

Robert, you are really going out on a limb predicting victory by a four term incumbent with 10 million dollars on hand for a campaign. Very gutsy.

Let me guess, you're predicting a Patriots' victory in the Super Bowl too?

Crit Luallen is a fantastic person. I was also sorry to see her decline, but I understand her reasons.
