Where to go for first ever fish fry?

by Sara R » Fri Mar 21, 2014 10:01 am

Lenten fish fries were not big in Texas where we're from (in fact, I had never heard of one until moving here a few years back, nor had my husband who's Catholic!) so I wanted to see where to go for the best fish. I've heard good things about St. Augustine, but unfortunately, both my husband's and my work schedules don't allow for us to take off in the middle of the day. So, we need one that serves past 6pm. We can walk to St. Francis of Assisi, but we don't know if theirs is any good. Suggestions?

SFoA is good. I can walk there, too. I think St. Pius has a good one. It's not far from you.

For my money, I feel that St Joe's in Butchertown has the best fish fry in town!

If you'd rather support a more inclusive denomination  ... St Mark's Episcopal on Frankfort Avenue (midway between Porcini and Blue Dog) does fish fries on Friday evenings during Lent.

Thanks for the suggestions! We ended up at St. Francis of Assisi last Friday due to sheer convenience. The food probably wasn't my favorite but we had a great time anyway. It was so crowded! I overheard the cashier saying that they had set an all time record for sales that evening.
