Louisville Science Café

by Hank Sutton » Thu Nov 29, 2007 7:26 am

(Repeat of a previous post)

The Science Café is this Friday night. You can come and go as you please and there are no tests!
And it is never boring with an adult beverage ;-)

Consider making suggestions for future café topics.
Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.
(Except for your own food and drink, of course.)

Speaker: Dr. Robert Esterhay, MD.

Bob will be speaking about efforts in Louisville to create the Louisville Health Information Exchange (LouHIE)

LouHIE aims to use technology to provide consumers and health care providers anytime, anywhere access to complete healthcare information

LouHIE is a very progressive idea, but there are a number of questions about its cost, patient confidentiality and scope. It should be an active discussion!

What is a Science Café?

For the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. One branch of this trend began in Great Britain and is called Cafe Scientifique. ‘Blue Mountain’ has joined this worldwide network in its attempt to advance science, to move discussion into the public arena – academics going to the public, not the public going to academics. Science Cafés have no brief to defend science at all cost. People are therefore welcomed to debate and ask awkward questions in a face-to-face contact with scientists at a community level in a ‘bottom up’ non-organizational manner.

The Café Scientifique Network does not have a narrow purpose, be it political, educational or scientific, rather it is helping bring science back in culture. A typical evening is spent in a cultural examination of science, from which each member of the audience draws their own conclusion and from which such discussion are an end in itself.

The previous Louisville Science Cafe sessions involved Dr. Ben Jensen on the Cervical Cancer Vaccine, Dr. Roy Burns on Modern Zoos and Species Preservation, Dr. Lee Dugatkin on Altruism and Dr. Robert Esterhay on Electronic Medical records and Health Information Exchange.

These are discussion and dialogue centered events that we hope to facilitate at least once per month. We are actively seeking sponsorship and Presenters and hope that in the not too distant future the top downs will meet with our bottom up approach and see the benefits of Science Cafes.

We are also pleased to accept acknowledgment from the Kentucky Academy of Science.

Everyone is most welcome to attend this Thursday night!
(The Louisville Science Cafe is usually on the last Friday night of the month.
There were no presentations in December or January.)

Dr. Jon Klein (our host and organizer from U of L) and I are looking forward to seeing you.

Nova Science Now starts tonight and is an excellent PBS summer series.
(and the host also has a good sense of humor!)

I highly recommend Nova Science Now because this program helped to launch the website
for Science Cafes in the United States. And Nova Science Now is just "darn" fascinating as well.

If you miss one of the broadcasts all of the program segments will be online the next day.
A podcast will also be available.

Watch a preview of the Wednesday June 25 broadcast, with host Neil deGrasse Tyson touching
