furniture store rec for good sofa

I tried to search the forum to see if this had come up before, but I got an error when going to the second page, so I'll just post my question.

We need to buy a new living room sofa, one that will complement our antique Wingback chairs (unless we go for very neutral, we may need to order the fabric). We'd like for it to be U.S. made, and to last a good little while. We're not looking to spend $5000, but are looking to spend more than Ashley's. We went by Burdorf's today and they're the best possibility so far for a Temple sofa. We've looked around the Goss Ave antique mall with no good possibilities. We looked at Macy's.

Other recommendations for a furniture store?

Charles, Burdorf's is probably a good choice in the range you're looking for. Bittner's, maybe, but they might go off the high end.

I wouldn't absolutely give up on the Goss Avenue Antique Mall. You can find some excellent furniture and some very good buys there, particularly since most prices are haggle-able. It's a real mix of junk, junque and classics, so I count on Mary to bring the good taste when we go. I'd probably bring home a moose head or something.

Charles,
We've had good luck with Basset off Shelbyville & English Station. You can order in any of their fabrics ( and they have a huge selection) - the furniture is then made in the US, with a reasonably fast delivery time too. They have different grades of construction so you can find something for your budget/quality needs.

I have bought much furniture at Burdorf's, but the three sofas that I have bought in the last twenty years have all come from Basset. Like Deb, I love the fact that I have total choice of fabric and that they are American made! :D

My remaining two sofas were bought in the mid-sixties. They have been reupholstered twice. That is where the Goss Avenue Antique Mall might come into play. But reupholstering is getting more and more expensive! :(

I hadn't considered Bassett. Thanks both of you. We were going to reupholster, but we discovered that we're looking at a minimum of $1500 now, and the folks told us straight up: If it is something that you treasure, then do it, otherwise, it's just not worth it.

Check out Charlottes Web Consignment Store. They have a department with new furniture that is very well made. Samples are on the floor and the selection of fabrics is really good

We had a sofa and ottoman custom made by La-Z-Boy to match an existing wing back chair. We were able to choose the style, fabric, etc. As I recall, it ran around $1600. Unfortunately, it ended up being a horrible experience and 2 years later, both the sofa and ottoman have pretty much fallen apart. The fabric faded within a few months, the seams have ripped and now there are exposed staples along both sides of the sofa. I would DEFINITELY not recommend La-Z-Boy!

One is nineteen plus years; one twelve years, one eight years. Nothing has fallen apart, no fabric has faded, no seams have ripped, no exposed staples. Good product. One of the sofas is a sofa bed with a remote control air matress! Love it!

Schmiitt's or Todd Colman's in New Albany both sell furnature of fine quality. Point to remember. You will probably not be buying the floor models as most better furniture is made to order these days. Basset, Haverty's, Burdorf's and Macy's are all the same way. No one stocks a lot of inventory anymore.

Don't make a decision without checking out Meridian. (don't forget to go into the "backroom".

http://www.merridian.com/ (they have much more than what's listed on their site)

One of the companies that builds sofas/chairs for the above mentioned retail outlets is regularly at the flea market at the fairgrounds. You can order direct from them selecting your own fabric for greatly discounted prices. I've gotten 2 sofas, an overstuffed armchair and a recliner from them. They have lasted for over 17 years. Now I am bored with them but have no excuse to get rid of them because they are still in great shape. The only drawback is you must arrange pick up and delivery from the fairgrounds yourself. Even paying someone to pick up and deliver for me I still saved almost 40% over retail.
