Name that motorcade

by Megan Watts » Fri May 04, 2012 7:48 pm

Today I got stuck at the light at Hurstbourne and Shelbyville because a large very presidential-ish motorcade was going through. There were at least 8 police cars with sirens and lights, 4 stretch limos and at least 2-3 unmarked Tahoe/Suburbans. So who, besides the Pres or VP would warrant such security on Oaks? Would a visiting Shiek get that kind of security? My sis in law is Secret service (in another state) and it just seems like something she would have been involved in.

Lots of VIPs get that treatment at Derby time, Megan. Back in the '70s, a bunch of us at the Louisville Times (now departed, alas) did a story and uncovered the not-so-secret reality that well-off folks could "buy" police escorts to and from the tracks by tipping the officers involved. This revelation turned out to be not even a scandal. The mayor and police chief laughed, and the practice continued.

I don't KNOW that the practice continues, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't.

I see several of these out of my office window as they come from the Embassy Suites off North Hurstbourne. I've often wondered why someone worthy of a ten car motorcade would be staying at the Embassy Suites.

Maybe easier to secure the perimeter?

I read about the police escort surrounding the rose garland, I wonder if the lily garland gets one too? Makes sense since it was made at the Middletown Kroger.

It continues, I saw it first hand last night at a place I was doing security at, Ice-T and CoCo and their entourage, got escorted to a certain spot all the way to the back door, by 4 undercover LMPD, and back to their hotel afterwards. I do have to say that ICE-T was a very nice guy, and his group was very low key.
