Where to get community aid

by Alanna H » Wed Oct 31, 2007 11:13 am

I'm not sure what you would call it, but I am trying to find if there are any agencies that help with unexpected expenses?
My daughter was admitted to Kosair Hospital under emergency care from 9/18/07 to 10/5/07, during which time she had two surgeries. She went to the Baptist East ER on 10/9 and was admitted back to the pediatric hospital a little after midnight on 10/10 and was discharged on 10/11. She had complications and her pediatrician sent her back to the hospital on 10/24 at which time she was admitted, and was discharged this time on 10/28. I am a single divorced mom of 2 kids and was with my daughter day and night in the hospital (I had a friend who was able to keep my young son during this time since I was staying overnight in the hospital as well). My parents are deceased and my ex-husband is not involved other than paying minimal child support, so I was the only one who could stay with her in the hospital. Because of this I was not able to work and did not have any paid time off accumulated. I have not received a paycheck for several weeks. I am fortunate that I have a good job and they were willing to hold it for me even though I haven't been here a year so don't qualify for FMLA.
Anyway, I am trying to figure out how to come up with November's rent. I was able to get some canned goods and a little bit of help from Highland Community Ministries but don't know where to turn for help on a big expense like my rent. I make good money and don't qualify for public aid-and don't NEED public aid, of course. Now that I am back at work and will start getting a paycheck again I know things will be okay; my daughter is back to school for the first time in a month and a half and is getting better and that's the most important thing. I just want to know if there is somewhere that helps regular people when unexpected circumstances happen?

So happy that your daughter is improving, Alanna.

My first response would be the community ministries in the area. I know you mentioned you had already received some assistance from them, but I would certainly ask them for direction for a cash gift. My other suggestion would be a small loan from a credit union. They tend to be more reasonable about people's odd situations rather than a bank. Just don't do a payday loan deal and pay an egregious interest rate.

Alanna:

Call your landlord and work something out. Landlords would rather keep a good tenant and not lose several months rent by evicting someone. Plus, in order to evict you the landlord must go through the forcible detainer process which is a pain and not cheap. be proactive. Don't wait until you are way behind. Call and shecule a face to face meeting, and explain your circumstances.

Glad your daughter is better, Alanna.

Red Cross gives great assistance in times of many different crises and disasters both large and small. They will also be plugged in to almost every other form of assistance out there.

Salvation Army does the same.

Call MetroCall at 311 as they have a database of info at the ready.

The Center for Women and Families also has a social services database.

Looking for help

by Paula B » Fri Nov 02, 2007 4:30 pm

I used to volunteer on the crisis & information line---Call 211, it gets answered by the staff and volunteers at c & i. I would also suggest if you belong to a church, ask if they could assist you in any way financially.

There are a lot of organizations in Louisville that will help, it may take a lot of phone calls.

Good luck to you and your family.
