Leaked Gannett document outlines CJ paywall

by Robin Garr » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:35 am

So, let's see, the print newspaper is failing, nobody likes the CJ Website very much, so they're going to start charging to read the newspaper online? Pardon me for saying so, but it's just freaking ironic that the corporation that came to town to bleed profit out of a once great newspaper continues making quarterly balance-sheet decisions that are gradually killing the patient.

If Herald Leader puts in a Louisville Bureau they could get a lot of people to switch

Another great business decision by Gannett. The hits just keep coming.

Robin-
After what 20 years(?), it may be time to move past the CJ. It is sort of like when someone bitches to their friends abut their ex-spouse. After a few years, they didn't want to hear about it.
And, you are absolutely correct when you might say that I don't have to hang here if I don't like it, that's an option available to both of us.

I didn't mean you don't have to hang here, Bill. Like I said, nothing personal.

Let me wallow in an occasional bath of bile, though. It's good for my spirit.

I don't understand a business model that continuously cuts back on local coverage and reporting, , something they are somewhat uniquely placed to do, in favor of regurgitating the same national and international stuff that a million other outlets supply.

Stockholder mentality. Everything is about short-term profits, even if the ship is steaming inexorably toward the rocks.

Robin,

What you do is mild. Barry Jr., had the news online for free when I was using a FAST 1200 baud modem on a dial in account. I absolutely HATE Ganett. They ruined the C-J.

We currently get the paper at home but I am not sure how much long we are going to do that. I RARELY read the C-J online. I will sometimes go there to find a specific item that is breaking news. I do still have a few holdouts there, who are friends, but every time they say JOB CUTS @ CJ I call to check.

I wish someone would come in here and put in an afternoon paper. That would probably kill of the C-J finally.

They can't lay off fast enough (or do much of anything else) to right the ship. And a firewall isn't going to change that path.

Frankly, I don't care if the C-J charges for its web content or not, as there are too many alternatives for local news availability anyway. I only buy the C-J on Sunday, and that is primarily for the coupons to clip. The C-J could become an daily local insert for USAToday and still be just as informative, since the C-J reprints the national Gannet stories anyway.
