What soap do you use?

by Steve H » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:56 pm

I came across this in an article I was reading:
Surface-level polling will see consumers tell us that the reason they buy a particular dish soap is because it is green, or cheap, or conveniently sized. But research shows the deeper truth is that, overwhelmingly, people buy the same brand as their mother did. (Nobody will write that on a survey.)

So, is it true? Do we use our Mom's brand of soap?

For me, as it turns out, the answer is yes.

I buy whatever is on sale, so unless my mother is buying the same on-sale product...

I couldn't even tell you what dish soap my parents use.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

We're currently using Gain. We like the smell of the laundy detergent, so decided to give the dish soap a try. My mother never used it.

I'm all over the place with soap. If I have a loose budget, I'll buy from Rainbow Blossom. If money's tight, I'll check the aisles of Big Lots. If I'm short on time and patience, it's big name brands at Valu Mkt. Concerning normal soaps, of course, like detergent, dish soap, hand soap, toothepaste, etc. Bath soap, however, is always precious and locally sourced / all natural - lye-free (my aunt makes soap and keeps me pretty well stocked, and my friends often buy me soap for gifts). But I will oblige that these are also my momma's habits!

My mom always buys Dawn now. But growing up we didn't have too much, so she probably bought whatever was cheapest. And now, I buy the store brand dawn..so I'm a hybrid??

Mom used Dial or Ivory. I use those hippie soaps that come with wacky flavors like sandalwood or oatmeal or almond and come in unwrapped rounds from Rainbow Blossom.

I'm guilty on both accounts and never thought about it..I use Dawn dish soap and Safeguard bath soap same as my Mom and she has been gone 24 years. I remember seeing Dawn at my Sister's kitchen sink just the other day too.

My brother works on robotics IT at a Unilever plant in NC and sends us a big package of soap once or twice a year. That means until they send his job off to Mexico, I have a lifetime supply of Axe :D

We use Method. I'm pretty sure naturally derived, biodegradable dish soap wasn't all that prevalent when I was growing up, and I certainly don't remember my mother using it.
