Water main break at U of L affecting all of downtown

by Lois Mauk » Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:45 pm

The Louisville Water Company has issued a boil water advisory in response to a loss in pressure from a 48-inch main break.

Boundaries are the Ohio River to the north, Watterson Expressway to the south, 9th Street to the west and Bardstown-Baxter Avenue to the east.

Customers in this area should bring all water used for cooking and drinking to a rolling boil for three minutes before consuming, and discard ice in their ice dispensers.

The advisory is precautionary and will be lifted once water quality tests confirm the water is safe to drink.

Customers outside this boundary who had low pressure during the break should also boil their water.

Whoa! No problems on top of Crescent Hill, about five blocks downhill from the Louisville Water Co. The biggest problems we have here usually involve too much water pressure.

We are near Preston and Oak, our water is light brown and the pressure is low. The pressure is a bit better then earlier , but I will boil until told otherwise. Showers may be a problem, Going to sponge bath tonight and see how things are in the morning. My job is in the boil water area too. Good thing I keep an emergency supply of bottled water here. We drove by there and it is a mess. :(

I filled a 5-gallon jug with good ole Southern Indiana water and put it in my truck this evening . . . just in case. If I have to, I'll put it on a hand-truck and haul it up to my 5th floor office tomorrow so we'll at least be able to take advantage of the "indoor plumbing". We have plenty of bottled water and soft drinks on hand there. My biggest concern is whether we'll have air conditioning in the building as I suspect it is a water-cooled system.

I live on Crittenden Drive. We lost pressure yesterday morning (10am or so), and I suspected it was due to a local digging project (at that new bar near the railroad tracks). Didn't think much about it until pressure went low again both at my place and my girlfriend's place (Highlands) around 6:30.

I'm betting the break is due to one of three things:

1. Old age - most likely
2. Old damage from when they overhauled the Eastern overpass
3. Damage from the project I'm talking about

Increased volume demand yesterday would have exacerbated any present or new damage. Don't think it's just coincidence that it happen on the hottest day EVER!
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
