Mathew,

Normally I'm not much of a "conspiracy theorist" but by the same token I have always believed that if you see a bird and it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...it's usually a duck.

Knowing a little of Bruton/SMI's history, combined with having time to sit and digest the events of the weekend, I'm personally convinced that this was a conspiracy (albeit one that "got away from them") to set the stage for extorting money from the state in the form of capital improvements. How else can you explain taking a venue that already has a history of traffic problems dating back 10 years, ADD forty thousand seats to that facility and then (on top of that) sell ten thousand "standing room only" tickets...all of which was done with no improvement to existing infrastructure ? Sounds like a "duck" to me.

Unfortunately, based on published statements I've seen from Governor Beshear, it would appear that he has exchanged his shotgun for a drink of Kool-Aid from Bruton's cup. On the other hand Senate President David Williams, a candidate for Governor (and who ironically was caught up in Carmagedon) issued the following statement concerning a Senate Investigation...Interesting reading for those of us who care. BTW (Robin...if you're listening) I find it somewhat ironic that this link comes from an OHIO newspaper and the release (apparently) was ignored by the Courier-Journal and the (Lexington) Herald-Leader. :?

Now I have heard different opinions about him in the past from like you "NASCAR junkies".
He has appeared to almost monopolize the sport by saturating tracks in areas and also strong armed NASCAR into adding races into an already declining market. Also he has dabbled into changing the points system which NASCAR has not cared for.
Bristol, Talledega, Indy, Martinsville, Dover and so on are traditions to fans kinda like the Rose, Cotton Bowls to college football, do we need more ?

Sounds like the title of the thread needs to be "Environmental Impact of nascar on KY', with thousands of cars just sitting all day to watch cars go around in circles there's no telling the amount of carbon monoxide that was released into our air.

Maybe we can get officials to turn that monstrosity into a horse track and get the drivers to learn a real sport - horse racing!

The speedway is blaming the parking mess on the tailgaters. They say there was plenty of parking for the cars with tickets to the race, but under estimated the number of people who showed up just to party.

Given the weather the past couple of days, I've been forced to take inside recess and have more or less made it a hobby following all the finger pointing...and yeah, I've seen any number of reports where the speedway is blaming Car-magedon on anything and everything, up to and including the phase of the moon. Everything but their own incompetence.

Not having made it to the track on Saturday I can't comment on the "tailgating" for the "Cup" race but if the races Thu and Fri night (both relatively crowded in their own right) are any indication, then I think they are reaching for the stars. Yes, people were parking and setting up canopies, lighting grills, etc. but (a) I had no sense at all that this was creating a space issue...people seemed to be very cognizant of keeping their "parties" reasonable...and (b) most of the people I observed tailgating were ticket holders as evidenced by the fact that before the race started they wrapped things up and headed for the entry gates.

People...even the 19 that don't follow NASCAR...might be interested to learn that the speedway has decided to (from their press release) "...roll out all the stops, and go above and beyond," in compensating fans who got screwed. To this end they have set up an "exchange" program wherein you send in your unused (in my case) $100+ prime location tickets and they send you back an equal number of sub-prime location $25 tickets to a race in Texas, New Hampshire, Atlanta, Charlotte or Bristol. They make no mention of who pays for the gas for the 5 to 16 hour drive or who pays for the "three day minimum stay - race weekend gouge priced" motels.

I've mostly stayed out of this tit-for-tat, but, if we are going to stick with Robin's idea of the neighborhood bar, I'm pretty sure you'd have been "escorted" from the premise by now - and be possibly a little worse for the wear.

On a related note -

To David Williams: Legislative hearings over last weekend's NASCAR event at Kentucky Speedway? Really? Could you show as much interest in education, balanced budgets and health care FIRST before you call on hearings over NASCAR? Geez, Louise!
