ticks! and lawn mowers.........

by Becky M » Sat May 07, 2011 10:32 am

two problems....

one...TICKS!!! it is our first spring in this home and we see we have a big tick problem, there is a large field behind our yard. we dont have pets, but i have little ones so this really bothers me. i NEED to get the yard cleaned up so they can play out there safely. what can we spray/use that is effective?

also.... we are in need of a new mower. noticed the electric mowers, and they say they are less maintenance. so we are considering one. has anyone used one before? it seems they have less power. we do not have a huge yard, just a basic size.

Becky:

When we moved here 16 years ago, you couldn't go out the back door without being eaten alive with fleas and ticks. We used Dursban for a couple of years and haven't had a problem since. But, that's not on the market anymore.

I suggest you go to Home Depot, Rural King, Tractor Supply, etc. and look for an insecticide for lawns. There are several good products out there. The granular products have to be applied with a spreader (I have one you could borrow, if you like) just before a good rain (not a problem lately). There are liquid products too; those have to be sprayed on.

Keep the kids off the lawn for a day or so. (Just follow the directions.)

My brother lived in California for years and kept a hugh Russian Wolfhound. To help keep fleas and ticks off of him he would add a teaspoon of vinegar to 1 gal of the dog's drinking water. I had a girlfriend whose home was infested with fleas one summer. They bit her husband constantly but left her alone. Why? Because (at least I think) she ate several dilled pickles every day with a high amount of vinegar in them. Fleas hate vinegar. Tics? I'm not so sure but it wouldn't surprise me if they were repulsed by vinegar as well. It certainly beats adding a bunch of nasty chemicals to your yard.

We give our dogs 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar every day with their food. Haven't had fleas or ticks in a long time! If you use apple cider vinegar, be sure it's the real stuff...not the stuff made from wood. We use Bragg's brand.

As for the yard, I know Sevin dust is supposed to be safer for kids and animals, but not sure if it works on ticks. You can also see if there is a supplier for food grade diatomaceous earth, it's supposed to work on all types of pests including fleas and ticks...but getting some may be more difficult.

Pool stores usually sell DE. probably not food grade though.

Unless you're planning to eat the DE, feed it to livestock or use as a pizza topping, I'm at a loss why the DE needs to be food grade. What am I missing?

Love guineas! They make terrific alarm systems too. Ain't nuttin' gonna get past a handful of guineas without you knowing about it!! Same for peafowl.

Bill...it's in case you have animals or curious toddlers, don't have to worry about them tasting the grass or licking off their feet.

Thanks. It has been a very long time since I've been able to lick my feet. :P
Almost as long as I've been able to see my feet.
