Nursery, garden centers

by Alan H » Fri Apr 01, 2011 12:22 pm

Any other suggestions other than Lowes or Home Depot ?
Also Frank Otte and Wallitsch have given me "sticker shock" at times...just can't see paying $55 for a 3 gallon shrub
Just seeing if anyone has a favorite local with fair prices
Thanks

Starview Nursery right outside of LaGrange has great plants and fairly reasonable prices. Worth the trip.

Testify! In addition to supporting not just a local but a forum member, John and Annie have GREAT products, and they're really nice people, even if they weren't forumites. ;)

Thanks for the kind words Robin and Justin. Im going to jump in and add that we are not a "nursery" but rather a greenhouse. A nursery grows/sells trees and shrubs, a greenhouse grows/sells flowers, perennials, bedding plants and vegetable starts. I think Alan was looking for a nursery. That said, Alan... If there is something "greenhouse" you need, let me know. Im always down with the barter system,so maybe a trade for some CQ food?
I also agree with Carol that Starview has some quality offerings.

Not finished yet with our website yet, but it is started. I have to fix some spelling and grammar issues as well as uploading the remaining pages.

I honestly thought that Alan was looking for shrubs or trees which John and Annie don't have--that is why I mentioned Starview. Certainly we all should be at Mt. Eden for all our greenhouse plants. Love you guys!!! Hope to see you soon.

Alan,

Thieneman's (off Old Henry and the Gene Snyder ) has a good selection and I think they have very fair prices. We've purchased several trees from them, along with many roses/perennials/annuals and their quality& health is very good.

I also really like the quality at Plant Kingdom on Westport Road. They are a bit more expensive, but if you are looking for something less standard I think their prices are fair. They are very knowledgeable too.

What a great topic! My husband and I experienced the same "sticker shock" at Frank Otte this past weekend as well. Now I know where to go!

I second (third?) sticker shock at Frank Otte, but they do have a great sale in the fall - most of their stuff is half off, and they usually start the sale in plenty of time to get things in the ground before the weather turns.

Popped out to Starview today to look around at some trees. Stuck my head in a couple of the greenhouses and things looked good.

One thing I would like to comment on...Last year I had a REAL Jones to get some stuff in the ground, so I bought some veggie plants at Starview. A couple of weeks later I bought some of the SAME veggie plants from John and Anne at Mt. Eden Greenhouse...planted the Mt. Eden plants side by side with the plants I got from Starview. Even though the plants from Starview were in the ground a GOOD two, maybe three weeks earlier...They never came close to being as healthy or as productive as the plants from Mt. Eden.

Like I said before...I'll go to Starview for trees and shrubs but for the most part, it's good ol' Mt. Eden for our flower and plant needs.

Are there any garden centers in the area that sell oak barrels? I'd like to use a few as planters.
