Suggestion for weekend get away?

by Jenny H » Tue Jan 11, 2011 5:12 pm

I have a friend looking for a get away that is 2-3 hours from Louisville. I will be in the next 2 months so outdoor activities are not really of interest to them. Anyone have some suggestions of where to go that have fun indoor things to do? Thanks for the help!

We had a great time in St. Louis over Labor Day weekend. We did spend a lot of time outdoors though. Anyway there was a lot to do otherwise.

I second Dan on St. Louis, though its more like 4 hours.. Stay at the Chase Park Plaza in the heart of the Central West End and across the street from beautiful Forest Park. There's lots to do there, and the dining scene is excellent.

Other options would be West Baden Springs/French Lick, Nashville, or the spring meet at Keeneland (though a hotel should be booked ASAP).

If they're just looking to get away but stay in, I would suggest Brown County, Indiana. They would have no problems finding a great cabin to rent. There is shopping and dining in Nashville, even a little winery tasting room, if they want to venture out.

Another approach might be Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, a beautiful place indeed, peaceful and restful, with a beautiful dining room and food that's ... well, at least okay. It's more of a historical/rest-the-soul destination than a food destination, but dinner the first night and breakfast buffet in the morning after a night in one of the historic buildings on the property still makes a decent way to spend an overnight or even a weekend.

If you go to Shakertown, you could stop by Beaumont Inn in Harrodsburg also. Love their fried chicken!

Excellent plan! In fact, as the food quality at Shakertown has dropped off a little in recent years, it might be worth considering a run over to Harrodsburg for dinner at the Beaumont Inn. The Shakertown dining room is absolutely beautiful, but it seems that a new food contractor a few years ago started cutting more corners. The food is still okay, but it reminds us a little more of a Denny's or equivalent than it used to do. On the other hand, it's such a pretty place, especially if you can get a table on the "sun porch" with its big windows, I can forgive a lack of gourmet chops.

Arrington? We went there on a warm fall day, took a picnic, and sat outside with a few bottles. Made for a great afternoon. The grounds are very pretty. The wine, well, two or three of them were pretty good, but I wasn't overly impressed.
