5 gallon black buckets

by John Hagan » Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:19 am

I am looking for a couple of food grade, black five gallon pails. It would also be a plus to have the lids. They really need to be black or at least some color that will not allow light to penetrate the bucket. I am using these to hold a concentrated fertilizer solution that should not be exposed to sunlight.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Will the orange Home Depot "paint" buckets not work? They run about $4 w/ a lid.

The orange pail lets a fair amount of light through. They are also not food grade. I have thought about painting regular white food grade buckets to keep the light out,but I didnt like the thought of paint chips flaking off and perhaps getting into the nutrient solution.

Just remembered I used to get green pickle buckets that should do the trick. I might still have a source. You just looking for 2?

Don't know if these are "food grade" or not, but I found BLACK 5-gallon HDPE buckets at Container & Packaging Supply. See:
http://www.containerandpackaging.com/item.asp?item=P500

Here's the best bit -- The company is based in Idaho, but they have a distribution center on Bluegrass Industrial Parkway in Louisville where you can pick up your order in person M-F.

$6.70 a piece.

Also available in red, green, yellow, white and orange.

This company also had tons of food grade storage containers, glassware, and lots more. I've been buying 8-oz. "jelly jars" from them for several years for candles.

Thanks guys. That Container & Packaging Supply looks pretty good for other things as well.

They're very nice and efficient. I've gotten calls from them within the hour of placing an order, advising that it was ready for pickup.
