I'm one of those who prefer to buy directly from the owner. Car dealers take a healthy cut. I've worked (albeit briefly) at a lot selling both new and used vehicles, and they build a potentially HUGE amount of profit into the sale (which allows plenty of bargaining power for the salesman/salesmanager game).
That said, I've heard Euro Imorts on Bardstown Rd recommended by a few folks as very honest
A non-scientific observation I've made is that cars seem to fall rapidly through the range of about $8-$12,000 down to the range of $2-$5,000. I could be totally wrong about that. But I'd nab the cars after they drop down to that lower range. Sure you do lose out on that extra 40,000 miles of reliable driving, but you cut the price by several thousands of bucks. So for a few hundred bucks in repairs you can save a bundle buying a car with 80,000 miles on it.
But everyone wants different things in a car. And I know, I know, they are a "status symbol" in our society. So they need to be new and shiny...
Oh, for public transportation in our fair land....
Nimbus,( driving a 92 Toyota most of the time these days. Paid $500, ten years ago! Maybe $1000 in total repairs over a decade. So my car has only cost me about $200 / yr. and it gets 34 mpg...never did like monthly car payments. Ick.)
