Replacement windows

by Michelle R. » Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:15 am

We're looking for a good, reasonably priced place for some replacement windows. Anyone had some windows replaced, lately and had a good or bad experience? I'd appreciate any info I can get. Trying to have this done without getting taken for a ride. :?

Prior to moving we had our windows replaced at our old house through Home Depot. We shopped around a little, not too much, and their pricing was competitive. The install went smoothly and was done well. The replacement windows performed much better than the house's original windows. The upstairs used to get really warm in summer, cool in winter. The replacement windows kept the heat out much better in summer and the heat in much better in winter.

I recommend Home Depot based upon the time I used them.

Good luck!

Michelle, we had all of our windows replaced in May and we used Window World. They were in and out (including removal of the ancient aluminums that we had) in about 6 hours. We're very happy with the windows - they look good and prohibit any drafts. Also, one of our cats tore a screen out about a week after they were installed and they were out and had it replaced within a couple days of our calling. They have a book with all of their customers, by address, that they will share with you. We wrote down some addresses near us and walked around and checked out their work before we committed. I thought that was nice to be able to do that.

I actually had a thread on it when we were shopping around. If you do a search, I'm sure you can find it. One thing I will tell you though, is don't be afraid to haggle. About two months after we had ours put in, one of the other companies that we got a price from called and offered us free installation - about a $2,000 difference from their quote. If they had offered that in the first place we would have gone with them, but at that point it was too late. The price would have been the same as Window World, but their product was finished a little nicer. Otherwise, they were essentially the same windows.

Thanks, Doug and Beth. We were actually considering Window World. They're coming out on Friday to give us a quote. We'll probably check out Home Depot, as well.

Before you go gettin' all lathered up about replacing windows...do you actually have defective windows (e.g. the seal is failing and the windows are fogging up) or are you just looking to upgrade ?

The reason I ask is that one of the favorite little tricks of "replacement window" companies (many of whom are just a notch above used car salesmen) is to point out how your window frames are rotted and thus the window needs replaced. Generally, particularly in homes built in the last 25 years, the first thing to go is the molding around the windows (it's called generically called "Brick Molding") and it has nothing to do with the integrity of the window itself. The problem can easily be remedied with hand tools, a Saturday afternoon and a little gumption.
