Dog boarding?

by Michelle R. » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:47 pm

My hubby and I are taking a vacation in Oct, and are looking for a reasonably priced place to entrust with our precious Goldens. Does anyone have some by-experience suggestions? I want them to be loved on and well cared for while we are gone.

Michelle, if you don't get the response you're looking for, may I suggest you contact GRRAND to see if any of their members do dog-sitting?

Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs

I know our organization has several members who do dog-sitting for Greyhounds. GRRAND probably has them too.

Just a thought . . . .

Lois, that is a fantastic idea! If nobody knows of a good place to board our babies, that is a definite option!

Michelle, I don't know if this would work for you, but when we go away, rather than boarding our precious kitties, we've always arrange to have friends - a single retired person who loves animals, or very responsible college-age children of friends - come in as a live-in house-sitter and pet-sitter. They'll work for a fairly nominal fee (and food from the fridge), and as long as you recruit wisely and avoid anyone who's likely to have their friends over for a kegger  you get someone to live in with the pets and watch the house for no more than you'd pay for boarding. Just a thought.

We love - LOVE - Bluegrass Kennels. http://www.bluegrass-kennels.com/. We get the cabin for 2 and they have a little private yard area. They did have a deal where if you pay cash when staying in the cabins you get $50 off. This makes it cheaper than putting them in a run and paying extra for play time.

Both of our dogs love it there - a boxer mix and a beagle mix.

Not sure what part of town you're in but I've used Pet School and Hotel at 11706 LaGrange Rd. (244-0519) I boarded 2 cats there although they primarily board dogs. Very nice people and I was impressed with how clean the place was. She wasn't as expensive as some of the other places I called. I will happily use them again.

We really like the KY Humane Society's Eastpoint Pet Resort. The volunteers really seem to care and the facility is very nice.

Whenever we go out of town we send our dog to Pet Suites in Middletown. We think of our dog as practically our child & they have always taken very great care of him. We have been using them for about 2 years now and have never had any complaints. You can visit their website & see what activities they offer for pets http://www.petsuitesofamerica.com/locations/louisville.

We've used the Eastpoint KY Humane Society facility as well for our youngest kitty when he was a baby and couldn't stay with the bigger siblings. I particularly like supporting anything the KHS does. However, we now get a live-in housesitter/petsitter while we're gone.

Resurrecting an older thread...

We need to board our 7 yo Golden for the first time this summer. I'm a little nervous about the poor guy being in a kennel. He's pretty spoiled and he has some anxiety issues. He was a rescue dog when we adopted him (years ago).

All of these suggestions from this thread are great. I just wanted to be sure that no one had anything negative to report about any boarding places. Also curious of the OP contacted Grrand and what happened with that.

Thanks,
Jennifer

I consulted this thread when I was looking for a boarding kennel. I have two 60lb dogs who are also very spoiled.

I contacted Bluegrass but they are ALWAYS booked. I tried to use them for May 13-16 and they were booked and again for June 10-13 and AGAIN for June 17-20. No luck.

We've been using All About Pets Resort. We live in the Highlands and it's way down Taylorsville Rd. and Chenowith Run (sp?). It's not an especially convenient location. The employees never seem particularly happy to see our dogs (nor anyone else's, for that matter) which is a bit off putting. We've boarded there probably 7 times since August, so you would think they would recognize us/act friendly. Our dogs seem to like it there though and they are always so soft and clean after their baths so we keep going back.

I'd love to find somewhere else. I called the Humane Society's boarding resort but I wasn't impressed.

We used Pet Suites for our vacation last year, and they did a great job. At the time, Aiden was under a year old, and we had only had him for about 2 months, so he was still an exciteable, somewhat confused puppy. He was very happy, and was in great spirits when we picked him up a week later. The location is a little deep from Highlands dwellers like ourselves, but is was worth the drive.

For shorter trips, we use Crescent Hill Animal Hospital. The vet there gets mixed reviews, but the staff is great and they do a great job boarding.

I had looked into the Pet Suites but was put off by the price. For two large dogs to share a space, it would be $44 and that merely includes 2 "potty breaks" a day. Add $6 each play times, $3 each additional potty breaks, etc., etc. and it really adds up quickly. I pay somewhere in the range of $24 each for All About Pets and that includes 2 activities a day (nature walks, play time, swim time, etc.) and a bath when I pick them up.

We're going to try the Eastpoint Humane Society kennel. I called Bluegrass and spoke with a less than friendly guy. He said their regulars book months in advance. I got the distinct feeling that they do not need new clients! He also failed to email me the a la carte services menu. Bluegrass' s daily rate is less than the other places, but the guy on the phone made me reconsider them as an option. The Eastpoint KY Humane Society seemed nice, so hopefully our dog will be happy there.

I'll share our experience when we return. This thread has been very helpful to me. Thanks to everyone!

There is a place East of the Gene Snyder called Dogwood Kennels that looks really nice and I've heard a few people say that really like it. But if you're going to use it this weekend, be warned, they're also renting out parking for the SPGA.
