Car rental

by Carla G » Sun Aug 22, 2010 7:57 am

I have to rent a car while my daughter is in town. Does anyone have a preference for any of the rental places? I just need something mid-sized to haul around 4 people.

I've always had good luck renting from Enterprise right there in Crestwood (in the same building as the auto body shop on Hwy 329)...It might be a buck or two more a day but the convenience is worth it.

I'll second Enterprise. My experience is they have a cheaper daily rate but have a mile per day limit. Enterprise is great for a fill-in vehicle but not so good for long trips.

Hmmmmm...I never had a mileage limit on anything I rented from Enterprise. Not saying they don't have programs that have limits...but I've put tons of miles on pick up trucks I rent from them and never paid a dime for mileage charges.

Maybe they changed their policy or maybe it was part of the $10.00/ day fee I was paying? Always was 150 mile/day limit.

I like Enterprise too- and they will pick you up and when you are done drop you off.

Looks like most of the car companies are around $27 for a compact, with taxes bringing it up to around $40. Make sure to reserve a car - last minute prices can be high. Weekends can be even cheaper.

And insurance is where car companies gouge you. Many credit cars give you rental car insurance automatically. That is what I always do. Decline the extra fifteen or twenty bucks PER DAY they try to sucker you into buying at the counter. Your regular car insurance may cover rentals too (they often do). A simple phone call to your agent can save you a bunch.

I usually just search at orbitz or exedia or hotwire or something and compare cars/prices. The companies are all about the same, unless you're a frequent traveler. Enterprise is nice because they'll pick you up, but I don't like them because they seem more pushy about selling you extras, and they seem to take longer to get in and out (versus going to a counter).

I rented from Enterprise & drove from Louisville to NYC & back. It was a few hundred bucks & several of the indicator lights came on (tires & maintenance) on the way there. The car was nice enough (some sort of Chevy sedan) but I was so turned off by the overall experience (including price) that I decided to start using my own car to travel. However, the location wasn't the one that others above have mentioned.

I've also rented from Enterprise many times and was always satisfied.
