93.9 classic hits radio station off the air

by Ellen White » Tue Aug 03, 2010 8:49 am

Apparently, 93.9 ceased operations yesterday. Now I'm back to searching for a radio station that plays 70s music. I know about WAKY (although sometimes they are a little too 60s for me), but what's that New Albany student radio station? And are there any other stations around that play "classic oldies" of the 70s variety?

Ellen, the New Albany High School station is WNAS. Here's the Website for more info:
http://www.wnas.org/

I don't know how accurate it is, but this site purports to list all Louisville-area radio stations by genre:

Looking more closely, it clearly leaves out some of the AM stations, at least. Maybe it's all stations that have a Website they could find?

The high school station in New Albany (WNAS/88.1) has a format that almost defies description, in that you're likely to hear almost anything -- especially when school is in session and the students apparently program much of the music. However, it's the eclectic blend that makes WNAS appealing.

A few years back, WRKA changed its format from "oldies" rock to country, and has found a niche in playing more "classic" country mucsic (largely from the 60's and 70's -- and even earlier), which I enjoy much more than the "country-pop" that Nashville is churning out today.

Seems that stations which narrow their playlist to a specific time period (e.g., 60's rock) generate a limited listener base, which in the long run dooms them to failure...

For old timers who remember where Sears used to be  it's actually WAKY, which was its four-letter call sign. It was based in Louisville for many years, and Baby Boomers remember it fondly as one of the two stations that brought us rock'n'roll back in the days when all the other stations played only the music our parents liked. (The other was WKLO.)

Is this possibly just a prelude to a format change or did the station actually go pah-tooey. I'm hoping they come back as an Urban Contemporary station so I can get my hip hop on <UMP-DAH-UMP-DAH-DAH-UMP>.

Well, hasn't that always been the standard approach to radio? We should note that Louie FM (100.5) -- which reported to play "anything and everything" but actually meant "anything and everything released by a major label within a certain spectrum" -- didn't seem to last long. It is now a GenX station.

I first heard such "anything and everything" stations -- aside from locals like 88.1-- in Austin, TX in the summer of '05. Think the station was called "Bob FM." The idea, it seemed, was to mirror the "randomizing" function on MP3 players. Not sure what the research has shown, but it didn't seem to work for Louie. My own theory is that the randomizing function is as bad as it is good in that I'd expect a listener to change stations - searching for a specific time period - when a song he/she did not like started to play. The switch to the "Gen X" theme narrows the randomness within a specific timeframe (what the time frame is I'm still trying to figure out).

95.7, and moreso 107.7, used to fill this niche well, albeit with the focus on classic "rock." Now I'm not sure how important the classic is given you will hear Nirvana, Pearl Jam, recent Tom Petty, etc. on those stations.

i read an article online that said cumulus radio totally pulled out of louisville. i do hope they put a similar station on the dial, because their music was really good. wrka was also a good station. i was running through the channels today, trying to find something to put on that pre-set button, but there's just nothing else I like that I don't already have (srf, qmf, lite 106.9, waky, and 102.3).
i tried to get wnas at 88.1, but it wasn't there. i used to get that channel, but nothing would come in on it today.

The Cumulus office is about ten feet from my office and it is closed tight with paper over the door on the inside. I'd say any chances of a revival in Louisville are nil.

Love the New Albany high school station - just wish I could pick it up all the way out in Simpsonville. It would be great tractor time music.

Everything I listen to is way down there at the bottom of the dial. WNAS 88.1, WFPL 89.3 and WFPK 91.9

I remember when we would twist the dial between WAKY & WKLO :D

To this day whenever someone at work mentions Indiana I respond:

"Indiana wants me but I can't go back there"

Thought of this when we dropped in on Kroger St. Matthews today, Ed, forgetting it was Seniors Day. They had loaded the sound system with Golden Oldies. OUR golden oldies! WTH!?

Remember the "Purple People Eaters" on WAKY. You really have to old for that to resonate.
