A warning to those in Phoenix Hill, Irish Hill, NULU, and Bu

by jpdurbin » Sun Aug 01, 2010 9:25 am

There have been some break-ins around here lately. Two fellows are suspect, one caught, one not. A few days ago a friend noticed someone scoping out my backyard. He was 6’ tall, black, 30ish, mid afro, and pudgy. Last night someone tried a forced entry with my lights on and me being within 10’ of the door. Both events occurred just after midnight.

Wish this guy would try to break into my house...from that point on he'd be described as: 6’ tall, black, 30ish, mid afro, and pudgy with a hole .357 inches in diameter in his ass.

AND as I was told by a cop friend, if they fall outside the house, drag them in. If they do not have a weapon, give them one after they die. Hope you never have to take tha advice!!!

Things are bad everywhere. My mother lives in the southend and her pastor told them sunday at services that all the women needed to come to church services and meetings in pairs because of women being attacked.
Our company does security cameras and alarms. We have done serveral restaurants as well as residential. We use a local monitoring company.

Life is too short to live in fear....

Burglars are often drug addicts; I don't think they deserve death sentences for that "offense." They just want some quick cash. Get insurance for your valuables. Safeguard priceless items (concealed safe or similar work well).

Guns are very dangerous, and are often used against people who live in the household. Further, they are often stolen and then sold dirt cheap, thus "feeding" the crime problem. I do recommend self-defense training - seriously. Especially for women. Great exercise is just one fringe benefit. If anyone is interested, I can hook you up with a great martial arts school and get you some free classes to try it out.

Cheers....

p.s. Experienced break-ins in Old Louisville, but Highlands have been quite safe.....

I was given the same advice during conceal carry deadly weapon course. The officer giving the class said it's okay if they are in your yard but best to drag inside the house/porch. He called the law "My home is my castle".

While I agree with Nimbus to some extent, but I will protect my family, have 14 years Infantry experience including sniper school.

Yeah, sure. Dumb. I am 68 years old and my self defense training is a 44 mag or a 12 Ga 00 buck shotgun, whichever I get to first.. I don't think that druggies deserve a death sentence for drugs, but if they come in my house they may well get one.

Castle Doctrine.

KRS 503.080 - titled as "Protection of Property." Easily found on Google.

I'll refrain from commentary.

I'm keeping my jaws clamped too, Matthew. One curious question, though: Can you tell if that statute is old law, or a recent arrival, perhaps NRA-influenced?

Robin,

I did a bunch of research, out of personal interest, into the concept/English Common Law/state statues on this issue after the shootout between the former J'Town cop and citizen over at the J'Town Kroger a few years back. Remember doing the work and saying, "Glad I know this now. Interesting." And hell, now I can't remember much of it.

There are actually two concepts at play there, the more common and referenced "Castle Doctrine" which comes from English Common Law and the related, but not exactly the same, "Stand Your Ground Law." From what I vaguely remember, Castle is limited to home property while SYGL applies to property more broadly.

This story makes it out to be a newer trend: http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=107276

I decided to keep my blood pressure in check and not read the article in detail. Skimming got me what I needed.

My inclination is to say that, as Castle Doctrine is from English Common Law, that SYG laws are recent NRA efforts to expand the scope of the law. But Castle has been around forever.

But, I'm not a lawyer. Just an interested party. When my blood-pressure (I'm almost thirty afterall) can take it.

Yes, I think that's right on point, Matthew. It cites a Florida model and specifically enumerates Kentucky among other states that have followed it. Thank you for the research. I think I'll go check my BP and lie down now ...
