Heat wave

by Carla G » Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:37 am

Do we have any forum members still that are weather aficionados? What's up with all this humid hot weather and when is it suppose to break? I've got friends coming into town the second week of September and I really want it to be milder so we can enjoy the outside. What are forecasters saying?

No, I am not going to let you-know-who back into the forum to answer this. ;)

Here are some graphics from NOAA, the National Weather Service, though, showing a slight chance of warmer and dryer weather than normal for this region from August through October.

That being said, don't panic: Because the atmosphere is a chaotic system, long-term forecasting is really much more of a matter of guesswork than short-term forecasting. Forecasts for a day or two can be pretty accurate, most of the time. For a week, not so much. And for a month or more, the records aren't much better than random.

I had the good fortune to have a staff meteorologist in my workplace for 25 years and thus became a bit spoiled when it came to dependable forecasts. It was amazing how often our resident NOAA guys hit things, even the 10 day forecast, darn near "spot on". Over the years I learned not to trust the TV talking headz simply because of the bias in their forecasts (they get most of their info via NOAA and then seem to "massage" it based on based on upcoming local events).

So, take that number (80 F), add ten degrees to it, and you have the new official forecast:

90 degrees and sunny, 30 % chance of precipitation.

Enjoy the new frying pan that we call earth....

Isn't this beaufiful!? I was almost chilly when we walked up to Heine's early for a latte and the NY Times, but I got over it.

If this is chilly, I'll take chilly any day! It's been like breathing soup for the last month...I can handle this!

Yes, well enjoy the "cool weather" while you can. 89 tomorrow (Sat) and back to 97 by Tuesday (NWS forecast)....

Wonder if the climate-change skeptics will ever admit it is warming rapidly....and to a scientist it is exceedlingly obvious why.

Annemarie, is that pasted from the CJ? I don't like them much, but we should give them (or other source) the credit ... Just a friendly reminder from your Forum Janitor ... ;)

I know what you mean. All those folks making global warming cracks during last winter's snows are amusingly silent now. I can't ever remember KY being so horribly hot so early in the summer season like it has been this year. In the past it seemed we had to wait til August to get any sweltering heat.
