Lost password

by David R. Pierce » Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:00 pm

My son has returned after a year on the road. He picked up his notebook but can't remember his password. We've tried all kinds of recovery utilities to no luck. It is a vista box which I'm told is impossible to recover. Any help out there?

So where is the last place he remembers having his password ? I'd start retracing my steps from there.

Yeah, so the last time he knew his password was when he dropped off the notebook last year. We've done all the common sense approaches over the last month. What we are looking for is some qualified person to step up and offer to fix it in the most efficient or brute force manner.

I sure any computer guy can get into it in a few seconds.

Yep, sure, tried all the password busters out there. I have friends that do this for a living and have the suitcase full of black ops goodies; anything but vista.

Who here can bust or retrieve Vista passwords. Again, all the free prigs listed on google, bing, yahoo, etc. Search engines did not work. And all the computer guys say sure, no problaymo, until you say Vista. I will nuke the thing with a clean win 7 install but we are trying not to lose all his data.

David, I'm sure you've found and tried this already, but About.com SAYS the Ophcrack "Live CD" program works on all version of Windows including Vista.

Try at your own risk, etc ...

That's what it claims, I have several copies that say otherwise. OPH came highly recommended is where we started...

Kinda sorta sounds to me like your son is about to learn one of the great lessons of modern society... Never-ever forget your password. Sometimes life lessons are frustrating...but in the big scheme of things often necessary.

Yeah, he's all good with that. This is my last ditch effort for him.

Another reason to regularly back-up your data, but you already knew that.
Good luck.
