hardwood floor refinishers recommendations?

by AmyBK » Tue Jun 08, 2010 1:21 pm

We are getting ready to embark on having several rooms of oak flooring refinished and there are some areas that will need repair/replacement of boards. I would appreciate any recommendations or suggestions. We are trying to get this finished by Labor Day. Thanks!

We had some old floors in this house redone about 10 years ago by a company named Allgeier. It was a very tough job - they're fine, narrow-board floors in a 100-year-old house, but after tornado damage the occupants at the time had simply painted the scarred floors olive drab. :P A later resident put down bad beige carpeting. When we pulled out the nasty carpeting, we thought the floors couldn't be saved. Allgeier did an amazing job of making them look like new. or like restored old-house new, anyway.

Possible concerns: They were good, and you paid for it. And this was 10 years ago. But if they're still around and you're willing to pay for quality, it would be worth doing due diligence at least.

Thanks for the recommendation, Robin. Yep, I'm bracing myself for the cost and the mess but its got to be done, now is the time and I want it done right. I have Allgeiers on one side of the family - maybe a family discount!

Terry Sears Hardwood Floors
1617 Forest Hill Drive, Louisville, KY 40205-2453
(502) 458-4510‎

If Robin's suggestion doesn't work out we used Terry on our renovation of 50 year old Highlands home's hardwood floors about 6 years ago. We were very happy with the work.

Previous owner had a leaky fridge that had discolored some boards that he replaced. We also had a lift that ran up the stairs and was removed leaving holes in the hardwood steps. He plugged those and they matched up very nicely.

Good Luck-Doug

One word of caution....be careful of the dust from the floors.

As many of you know, old houses often contain lead paint (almost all of them do). Lead paint is typically common on doors, trim, and windows. And floors too. (the stuff is durable).

The stuff can be very dangerous for young kids especially. Just something to keep in mind if your floor sanding involves painted floors (I've done that before - no fun at all). You've really got to make sure to do a complete cleanup before exposing people to the dust.(Area should be completely sealed off, etc) (proper masks help the workers - somewhat -heeheee, still a nasty job, I hate breathing that stuff)..

Cheers!
