Speech/Occupational therapists

by Megan Watts » Mon May 17, 2010 12:57 pm

My son will soon be "aging out" of First Steps in July. We're going to have to continue with a new ST and OT in our fight against Apraxia and Sensory issues. Does anyone have any suggestions or personal experiences with anyone in these fields (that work with children). thanks!

My son had some speech therapy at U of L (age 4), and then through JCPS age 5, and continuing through JCPS when he entered kindergarten and 1st grade. I think it is through headstart if your kiddo isn't school age yet.

They'd both be worth looking into at least. The one through the public schools is free, which is nice. I think he goes to a couple sessions a week now, right at his elementary school during the day. Steady progress!

Both seemed to be of comparable quality, and fairly similar methodologies. One thing is that both programs are super slow to get started.

Good luck!

He is starting preschool through Shelby county in the fall. They offer speech, but it's group and not individual. I'm thinking we're going to need more. We're finally getting words, but lacking in putting them together and still not asking for what he wants. He did learn how to say "spank yer butt" though. Great, right?

Dear Megan,
Easter Seals has a great reputation , and I would also ask Home of Innocents for any recommendations.

Megan,
Heuser Hearing & Language Academy has several excellent SLPs on staff (disclaimer:I work there, but am not an SLP). It is located in Old Louisville, a bit of a drive for you, but worth giving them a call.

Sorry I'm late to this, Megan. Our son was treated very well at Cardinal Hill/Easter Seals for his Sensory Processing Disorder. He had OT for several years there that eased him through his transition. His issue was related to him growing faster than his neurological system could keep up with. The people there are very caring and it is right off of I-64 depending on where you live in Shelby County. I hope you find whatever resources you need and wish you the best for you and your son.
