No news or sports in the CJ?

by Steve A » Sun May 02, 2010 9:41 am

Production problems prevent delivery of full Sunday Courier-Journal
Electrical problems with the printing press caused Courier-Journal home subscribers to receive only the pre-printed sections of the Sunday newspaper...

Does this happen often?

What really amazes me is I'd imagine this would be a big circulation day, considering there might be one or two big stories to report on.

Oh, boy - somebody's gonna get canned over this. Steve, I've never heard of that happening on such a big day for the paper! Wild.

I got no delivery at all, just an email offering the e-edition. This probably the last straw for me. If I gotta go to the web to check the Kroger ad, I might as well ditch the paper, since I can see most anything else I need on line then. I have been having delivery issues for some time now (get tired of the morning search for the paper some days), and despite a new carrier, still having them.

To top it off, the DERBY Edition!!! Geez, how many of those have gone home to wherever with our guests? I Imagine there is more to the story, but it probably comes down to cheap equipment and/or cut backs in labor. Gannett has lost me for good this time.

Annemarie- the same thing happened to me. I cancelled my subscription after 52 weeks because, well, there was nothing in it that I wanted, and they kept delivering the paper.
Not a way to run a business, is it?

Actually, for a newspaper, it may be. Ad rates are based on circulation, so do anything they can to prop up their plunging circulation numbers, even if it involves giving lots of papers away.

I was always deeply suspicious that they counted within "circulation" those nasty little throwaway papers that used to litter our streets until the city made it illegal. (I notice that they've started showing up again on our street, by the way - not as bad as before in terms of numbers, but still tossed on the sidewalk rather than up on people's porches.)

Re: the posted link about the health and well being of the CJ-
OMG I have never read so much spin in one article! A few of his statements I found credible and important, like the necessity of newspapers and solid news reporting to help keep government and businesses honest. (i.e "what would they do if they knew no one was watching?" kind of thing.) I do wonder why, if the CJ employs so many local journalists, does way more than half of the news found in the paper come the AP lines?
Nope. I'm not buying his argument at all. It's unfortunate, I've been a newspaper reader for years, but the time of the daily paper is just about past. Rather like the time of a blacksmith after the invention of the auto. I'm not happy with the mass proliferation of "news" sites on line and I think the public will suffer with the loss of credible news sources but it's happening none the less. Weekly papers may survive. People will always want to have something in their hand to read, but it won't be a daily habit anymore like it used to be. Weekly papers with real news (like LEO) will likely survive. But Velocity has been on artificial resp. for a couple of years now.

We canceled our subscription years ago, and up until we changed our phone number, they called us periodically, BEGGING us to allow them to deliver a free paper. We said no. Now, we get little cards in the mail every so often, offering free papers. They get thrown in the shredder. Why go through the hassle of tossing the stupid thing? The only thing it's good for is lining a dog crate.
