desperate for really bad hay

by C. Devlin » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:11 pm

As we all know by now, we're in a drought. What that means for me in particular is for the first time since we've been here I can't find the sort of hay I need for my gelding who has foundered and whom we now have to permanently take off pasture. My veterinarian has some grass hay she's willing to swap for my alfalfa mix, but after umpteen calls today I'm unable to find anybody who has what I need. Grass hay. Plain, crappy grass hay.

Anybody have any contacts? We can travel a good distance.

We have a second cutting this year -- not sure but probably late July or early August. We are over in Bath Co (between Mt. Sterling and Morehead). I would guess that our hay meets your needs. The person that normally cuts it usually does round bales but we may be able to do square bales. A side note ... it is ceritified organic.

PM me if you are interested in reserving some.

I have a friend I work with who has a farm in Spencer County. I think he has alfalfa hay but will check with him and let you know.

Thanks a bunch, Ed. So far I think I have something like 20 bales of grass hay lined up, which is a good amount for one young foundered gelding, but will need to find a steady source for beyond. When we moved here a few years ago, my husband looked at all the lush green and said, "Wow, great pasture land," and I looked at it and thought, Uhoh, that looks like a disaster waiting to happen. My worst fears are realized. :(

The gods have looked kindly on us. It turns out my beautiful boy has a rather bad abscess and only appeared to have foundered (although the abscess is probably a result of a mild founder months ago). Still need hay in the long term, though. So those offers are still something I'm going to be following up on later. Thanks so much to y'all who emailed and responded.

The big snow a couple of years ago....

I need way more current pics of him.... He's only about 7 months here.... He actually does have an entirely whole physical body....

He's my pretty boy. His mom's a Paso Fino and his pa's an Arabian. He's the result of an evening of his pa's owner and me sitting around after a few beers and wondering what one might get between a Paso and an Arabian. Now we know. :D
