Let me say (before Robin deletes this thread, as I requested - Thanks, Steve P and friends) I support Tyler Allen for Mayor now that Abramson is going.

Guys, with all respect to Ken's request, I'm reluctant to delete a topic with a lot of substantive information in it, and we certainly don't have any rules against robust debate. However we do prize civil discourse in a community of peers, and I would ask that we all try to avoid personal attacks and belittling comments.

Think we can handle this? I'd like to believe so ...

It will be interesting to see how Abramson's lame-duck status now will affect these issues, and it will be interesting to see how potential nominees and candidates for his job will jockey for position. I look forward to seeing Allen show himself as more than a one-issue candidate - even if I support him on that issue.

Broken Sidewalk keeps producing thoughtful, researched statements on downtown roads and bridges. Too many people don't want this point of view heard and too many people don't want to listen.

I would like Magruder a lot more if he would consider the fact that Colonial Gardens is a dump, that it's been a dump for 40 years, and he would just agree that bulldozing it is a good idea. Sometimes old is just old. Not good.

Should we consider I-64 a historical structure?

I spent my early childhood not far from the old Colonial Gardens. We have wonderful photos of my parents and friends partying there in its heyday. By day, even then, it wasn't much to look at on the outside. I never saw the inside. At night, though, it hopped. It was a lively dance hall, often with name bands playing. It has a history.

I drove by there a few weeks ago and it looks sad and tawdry. It would take a lot to make it back into anything interesting or exciting - especially with all the banal strip malls around it, and despite its location next to Iroquois Park.

The South End needs more cool spots and cool businesses, but I'm not sure the old Colonial Gardens is that spot.
