Alas, Woolworth's went out of business here in the US a few years ago, at least from what I have read, and just a month or two ago the last one closed in the UK. :(
I was in upstae NY not too long ago and ran into a Ben Franklin which I thought were dead too.

Was there ever an EJ Korvetts in Louisville? I remember it from all the places I lived as a teen.

Actually, a "Ben Franklin" is still operating in Middletown (off US 60)....it's been there for years.

There's still a Ben Franklin store in New Albany as well. It's on State Street, near I-265, across from Target, near Kroger and Big Lots. The one in Charlestown is gone though. I believe they still have Ben Franklin stores in Jasper and Mitchell.

The one we had near us in Chicago always had a large black and white stripe sign. The building was more or less stripes of black and white masonry. I remember calling it the zebra store.

As the story goes, that the founders of Zayre's originally planned to called it, "Zayre Gut", which supposedly is Yiddish for, "Very Good", but lacked the money to place the entire name on their first store, so they left it as "Zayre"....when business picked up they thought about adding "Gut" to the name, but decided that it would probably confuse the public.

I remember both...there was also a competing chain called "W.T. Grant".

I lived most of my childhood in Indianapolis, during the '60's, and there was a Grants close to my home....don't know if there were any here in Louisville, although I recall that another five-and-dime chain -- JJ Newberry's -- had a store in the old Camelot Shopping Center back in the 1970's.

I remember Rose's in Shelbyville. It was a step well below Kmart. I went in that place ONCE with my mom when I was in middle school.

I go to Target maybe once a year. I don't dislike but I try to buy local whenever I can. Walmart I try to avoid at all times, though whenever I visit my dad in rural Alabama (also about once a year), unfortunately I have to use Walmart products because that's what he buys.

You may buy local, but where was it produced?

That's a good point, and one that I try to be cognizant of as well. Food-wise, that's why I try to patronize local producers, local grocers and farmers' markets, as well as eat produce out of our garden (my gf does most of the work, I have to say I'm not much of a gardener/farmer-type).

I'm not a fan of Wal-Mart, but the stereotyping of folks who shop there as poor, ignorant, unenlightened meth-heads seems kind of ridiculous to me. I don't shop there, unless I HAVE to, but I know plenty of folks who do, and they are far from poor, ignorant, unenlightened, or meth-heads. Really? In this day and age, in a recession, to look down your nose at someone trying to save some money to feed their family, or pay their rent is pretty callous.

That wasn't my intention, Michelle.

I was referring to people who really like Walmart and I stand by my assertion that the only people I know who care for it are people who live in markets where Walmart is the only option.

My in-laws think that Walmart is the bee's knees, but the only places they have to go are church and Walmart. My nieces both go about 4 times a week just to get out of the house.

There are also many farmers in that community, and the older folks still get their social fixes at the post office, and meth is a huge problem.

I know that people in Louisville go to Walmart but I never hear them say that they enjoy the experience.

And I don't look down on people who try to save money. I take pride in my own frugal nature and I have great respect for people who know how to live within their means.

I think the key here was the word "like". Its rare that I meet somebody who actually "likes" to shop there. I would think most folks would rather have a shopping experience thats more pleasant than what wally offers.

I don't "like" shopping at Wal-Mart any more or less than Target...in my case, W-M is more conveniently located, so that's where I occasionally go...and typically limit my shopping list to picking up toiletries, hardware/houseware or automotive items because their prices can be very competitive....however, there are some people who shop at W-M out of necessity, vs. personal preference or some misperceived socio-ideological caricature....not everyone can afford Von Maur, folks.
