What really urks me is the fact that there are multiple trucks at the Ryder Cup to make sure they have power, meanwhile there are people from OUR community who are suffering. We can offer hot meals, and electricity to hurricane evacuees, but not people in our own community? How can the city have a huge celebration while a quarter of its population is without electricity, and there's nowhere for us to go? All the hotel rooms are gone, gas stations are running out of gas, yet, we're still expected to be at work, and a golf tournament takes precedent over citizens who live here, and contribute to this community every day. It makes me angry. Clearly, Abramson and LG&E need to get their priorities straight.

Guess I should be glad I have a gas stove.

Still no power, but I have high hopes that it will be hooked up by the time I go home this evening as they were busily repairing the lines at Jefferson County Traditional Middle(my power won't be on, but hope springs eternal.)

My backyard, the neighbors backyard, the next neighbors backyard.

I don't always side with the Mayor, but I'm going to side with him on this one. We're hosting an international event and we need to have our "stuff" together and not look like a bunch of back-wood hillbillies who can't pull it together. I'm on my way to Vallhalla so I'll report back if I'm wrong, but I doubt there are "multiple" power trucks at the Ryder Cup. They may have been in that area first, but I'm sure they moved on. The reality is that someone had to be first and someone has to be last and nothing can change that. It makes a ton of sense to me that places picked to be first would be ones that have the largest impact on our community....and apparently that doesn't include me....but I think I'll survive...still waitng for power in Crescent Hill....

So we should suffer so some people can golf? I think that's ridiculous. I'm all for our city not looking like hillbillies, but the citizens should have been first priority. I think that in a time of crisis, the citizens of this community should come first. Where are people supposed to go? What are folks without friends/relatives here supposed to do? Many of the shelters are without power. Many grocery stores and restaurants are without power. Most of the hotel rooms are taken. Thankfully it's been mild this week, or we would have a myriad of other problems to contend with. We provided Hurricane evacuees with a place to go, hot meals, entertainment, but not our own citizens? I'm lucky. I have my own home. I have relatives with power, so I'm not hurting too badly. My concern is for the folks who have nowhere to go. What are they supposed to do? It seems that perhaps some of the energy expended in making sure the Ryder Cup could proceed, could at least have been put towards providing a place for people with no place to go, a place to at least get a hot meal.

Perhaps I'm wrong.

I don't think you're wrong, Michelle, but I'd like to hope that the city is trying to cover both bases at once ... and maybe not fully succeeding.

(I have a different demon ... after living through the sale of the local newspapers to a major corporation, I find myself wondering whether a German conglomerate is really as responsive to our local needs (or cares about them) as locally owned LG&E used to be ... )

My point exactly, Robin.

Of course I want the Ryder Cup to go on as planned, and I want it to be fabulous, as it will bring attention to our fabulous city. I just think perhaps Mayor Jerry and LG&E's priorities are a little skewed.

OK, Here we are in the midst of day 4 (OH MY GOD)! I'm battle weary, to say the least. And I'm at my wits end about no lights.

REALITY CHECK------Look at what's left of Galviston.

LG&E......my thanks for your efforts. Come fix my lights and I'll fix you some good coffee!!!!!!!

Just FYI, I was at the Ryder Cup yesterday and the E-On/LG&E group were NOT using their big fancy corporate tent this week. I think they are working hard and doing the best they can, but maybe I am too optimistic.

A classic Louisville culture thing, and I think a lot of us were brought up that way.

For the record, though, when your "guests" are paying money to come to town for an event and we hope they spend a lot more in our restaurants, shops and stores, it's not exactly the same kind of thing as Uncle Vinnie and family coming in to spend a few days at your house ...

Thank you for the implication that I was being somehow impolite for expressing my frustration, or that perhaps, my parents have failed in raising me correctly. You might feel differently if it was your elderly neighbor, or grandparent whose sight isn't what it should be, or who is on oxygen, who is having a bear of a time coping with the power outage.

It just seems to me that with LG&E being in Germany, and not really knowing how bad this is, that perhaps Mayor Jerry would show some concern for actual citizens of this community (you know, the people who elected him), in addition to making sure the Ryder Cup went off without a hitch. I know the winds took EVERYONE by surprise (nothing like seeing half of a tree come flying at your window), I would just feel better if I knew people who can't fend for themselves had a place to go. Seems in this case, that many of the less fortunate and/or elderly, have been overlooked. It sucks not to have power, but I'm young and healthy, and I'll be ok. People who have trouble getting around, well, frankly the fact that many of them are without power, concerns me. If that makes me a bad citizen, please forgive me.

Just got this via email:

The church received a call today from American Red Cross. They are going to be setting up a shelter for Power Outage victims at the Louisville Gardens. It will open tonight (Wed 9/17) and be open through the weekend if needed. There will be cots, meals, showers available. They are asking volunteers to work 6 hour shifts. Volunteers will be signing people in, serving meals, answering questions. There will be an orientation for all volunteers upon arrival.
If you are interested or available please contact Paul Beede 407-9330.

Hope this info helps!

Meh. My bad. I think lack of electricity is getting to me, and making me all stressed, and therefore, high strung. One can only read so many books in the dark, or by flashlight before going cross-eyed and partially insane. No apology necessary. :D

An update from wild, wonderfull Oak and Preston. Still no power. Managed to get dry ice, so the freezer is saved - thank goodness for a Kroger guy in the family! No batteries within a 10 mile radius. Someone put a huge generator near the firehouse that is powering the whole block, just not ours. I am glad the firefighters got power, lifting those bay doors by hand is HARD! I just cannot help feeling a bit jealous when I see lights so close.....<sigh> :( We are coping, getting a bit strung out on clean clothes. Today we look for an open laundrmat. We have been dragging our various electronics to work, Starbucks and other places to get online a bit faster and to recharge. Going out on my daily trek to see if my auto shop is open (had an appointment to get my brakes done on Monday - no power and a down tree in front of their door), look for batteries and survey the neighborhood.

We will tell tales about this someday and they will be remembered fondly!! Just not right now. :D
