My brother and I went to see Michael Jackson in '88 or '89. I think tickets were under $20, and that was considered expensive, then. Makes you wonder how Barbra Streisand and Mariah Carey can command not just hundreds, but thousands of dollars for a single ticket. Ridiculous.

I'd call it "HasbeenaLou" to be more accurate.

To see the up and coming talent, go to the Forecastle Festival happening in the same month.

Note on edit: I just saw that others had similar thoughts. Glad I'm not alone. (Or else I'd think I was going nuts)

We might be wrong on the economic impact. Somebody is paying to hear this crap. The number 1 and 5 touring artists of 2008 are coming.

http://www.billboard.com/news/bon-jovi- ... 1575.story

Bon Jovi's Lost Highway tour tops the list of the biggest tours for 2008, based on data reported to Billboard Boxscore from Nov. 14, 2007, through Nov. 11, 2008.

In second place is Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band's Magic tour, which grossed $204.5 million

Rounding out the top 10 are
Madonna ($162 million for the still-underway Sticky & Sweet tour),
The Police ($150 million on the second leg of their reunion tour)
Celine Dion ($91 million)
Kenny Chesney ($86 million)
Neil Diamond ($81.2 million)
Spice Girls ($70 million)
Eagles ($56.6 million)
Rascal Flatts ($55.8 million)

Now that's funny...I don't care who ya are. But you are right, it would have been preferable to see them mix in some "new" talent (and maybe some rockin' blues) with the likes of Chesney and the DMB.

Granted I'm approaching "Geezer-dom" but calling bands like the Black Keys and Pretty Lights "talent" is using the word vewy-vewy loosely...and if you've heard one Widespread Panic jam, you've heard all nine thousand and ninety nine of them. Just sayin.

Where is Modest Mouse? Lucinda Williams? Rickie Lee Jones? Bodeco? My Morning Jacket? Pat Metheny? Spoon?

When I heard the words racetrack.....multiple stages......I started thinking New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. I think Churchill Downs OWNS the racetrack where Jazzfest takes place. Time to send for some help from the mothership, I'm thinkin'.

Agreed, except I would have to say that Forecastle has gotten less jambandy over the last 2 years, much as Bonnaroo evolved from what started as a purely jammy event. I see a lot of other genres represented pretty strongly now.

Summer festivals like Forecastle and Bonnaroo have to have some roots and representation in that scene, as it's only the hard-core jam-band goers that you can count on year in and year out to hang out for three days in 90+ degree heat in places like Louisville and Manchester.

I just checked the lineup, and I don't think it's too bad. Yes, a VERY random mix, and lots of has-bens, but Sam Bush, Al Green, Gov't Mule, DMB, Dwight Yoakam, and definitely the Black Crowes is pretty solid. 1-3 bands/day I'd like to see.

Al Green, Black Crowes, Taj Mahal, and Gov't Mule would be decent. The rest...meh. Definitely not worth the $$.

Alas the obvious is with HullabaLOU you are looking at the economic impact, with Forecastle you are looking at the enviromental impact.

Forecastle obviously has a genre that HullabaLOU is not going to attract ( Black Crowes ) being the exception, but for what it is worth Forecastle with all the diverse music and upcoming musicians, shows ,etc... is what music is all about.

Yes I have been to numerous Dead shows and Phish shows also several music festivals as far as Colorado, and there was a cause highlighted in these events. And yes I enjoy Panic going into a 20 minute instrumental just as Zeppelin does in The Song Remains The Same on several tracks.

My classic rock tastes range from Elvis to Stone Temple Pilots without naming hundreds more, but to spend the weekend with The Black Keyes, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Avett Bros.,, Umphrey's McGee, and Dweezil Zappa helps me stimulate both my ecomomic and enviromental impact....

Just my opinion.. 8)
