However, there's been talk about making the Off-Topic Forum into Off Topic and Coupons, and we may yet do that.

Problem is, a lot of folks appreciate Annemarie's coupon postings, and we don't need to stomp on that. But maybe we can have it both ways ...

I didn't say anything about stomping on Annemarie's coupons just giving them their own area.

I think that would be a great idea. Maybe we could call it "Deals and Spiels" ?

I also think a separate section would be great. It's getting hard to find real topics in here. You can find these deals every day on www.wisebread.com. they have them in a nice little section near the top of the page Mon-Friday.

Robin has graciously granted me permission to solicit ideas from you all, so here we go.

I'm thinking about putting together a Louisville-centric deals site and could have it up and running in a few weeks.

  • The site will contain local discounts, coupons, special offers, and pointers to local businesses that commonly offer all of the above.
  • We would also welcome national deals, as long at they're of interest to Louisville residents.
  • We would rely heavily on local tipsters, and the community would be allowed to "rate" the tips, something along the lines of digg.
Foodie/eats deals would still be encouraged on LHB as well as the new deals site.

What do you think? Is this something that you members of LHB would visit and contribute to?

Any other ideas?

Sounds like a neat idea. I wonder about the "national deals" thing though. That can get to be a pretty gray area. We already have somebody on the forum who feels its appropriate to put up ads for free anti virus software under the "all about Louisville forum". But then again, it seems like I am one of the few who people here that finds that type of posting annoying.

I dug back a few months and took a very quick peak at the number of new threads on "Louisville Forums" and while I didn't do a statistical analysis, it seems there were only one or two new threads per day here. I'm confident Robin will come to a reasonable decision on this, but maybe some of the folks who think this is a problem should start posting some "Louisville" topics to restore balance. I don't view it as Annmarie posting too many threads, but rather the rest of us not taking advantage of our opportunity to add value to this part of the site.

OK...good points Bill. That was well put. Just to be clear, I dont have any problem with Annmarie, just think there would could be a better spot on the forum for that type of thing.
I will take up your challenge Bill, and try to post something relevant to Louisville in the near future.

True .. I see nothing wrong with the postings especially as long as the heading is pretty clear. Open or not as a person wishes.

Maybe some folks should just become familiar with the "mark topics read" function?

If you click on any of the forums - the "All About Louisville" forum for example - at the top, right above "Replies" in blue it says "Mark Topics Read". So if you ventured into "All About Louisville" and there was nothing of particular interest to you, you can hit "Mark Topics Read". You don't have to actually open or read any of the threads with new activity in them, it marks them as read for you. I hope that makes sense! I am waiting for my coffee to finish brewing.

I have used that button in the past, thought other folks might not be aware of it.

Ok I understand how that "mark topics read"function works, I just dont see the relevance here. I dont open the "AD" type posts anyway. My problem is having to scroll down thru so many to get to something that actually does have something to do with Louisville. I think there is about fifty topics per page,a quick count showed about 18 or 19 "AD" type posts. To me that seems excessive. I just figured everybody had a google type search engine on their computer that would allow them to find "free anti virus software" on their own but I guess not.

I'm in total agreement here with John, and thanks for bringing it up. This is in NO way a slam on Annemarie, cause she's a character and I get a kick out of some of her opinions, but I don't live like her, and these ads are a little inundating. And she's not the only person starting the topics, so it's not like I can just skim through and avoid anything Annemarie starts. No - A LOT of them start to take on the appearance of a shopping topic, whether or not they are. Makes me reluctant to open just about anything for fear of my time wasted. I am not on Hotbytes for a shopping coach and I avoid this forum because of it, but it used to be full of fascinating topics and I think it could use a make over. Ahh, that was a realease. Sorry to those of you who may be offended, I'm not trying to act superior, I just really agree with the poster and I still like all y'all.

Thanks for your support Jackie. Unfortunately it looks like the majority of people would rather come to this section of the forum to find great deals on free anti virus software or good deals at Apple Bees than anything Louisville related. I realize there are Louisville related topics on this section, but just not like it used to be.
Oh well, I was hoping there would be some momentum for starting another section of the forum for those type of posts, but I guess not.
