Target...hands down. It would be really nice if they would put in a real "Super Target" in L'ville as opposed to the half-way thing they are doing in St. Matthews.

I agree with Robin in that I have some philosophical reasons for not shopping at Wal Mart. I will (very) occasionally patronize one of their stores but I never fail to walk out without feeling an overwhelming urge to gouge my eyes out with my car keys.

Gayle,

Compared to just about any retail company Target has always been a model corporation. They have always been very active in giving back to the community. One program I have always admired is their gift of (I think it is) 1% of their profits back to local schools. I haven't noticed Wally World stepping up to the plate in that manner. One of the first "Super Target" stores opened in Apple Valley MN (a mile from our house) in 1991...We loved shopping there.

The only people I have ever met that like Walmart are all from dry rural counties where the only things to do are farm, smoke meth, go to the post office, or go to Walmart. If I lived in a place like that I might like Walmart too, but probably only until I gave meth a try.

That's an interesting statement, given that there has to be over a dozen Walmarts in Louisville, which is neither dry nor rural. I'm gong to have to assume that the business is sustained almost entirely by the Louisville population. (Especially given that the surrounding counties most likely have Walmarts of their own.)

Having said that, I LOVE Target! It's hands-down my favorite store. Great selection, cute stuff, very clean, and I love their generic brand "Archer Farms." I love to stroll at the end of the aisles and find the great clearance deals on the end-caps. I agree that I wish there was a local SuperTarget, they have great prices on their groceries. I wish they had a more flexible return policy too.

While I know some folks are going to take offense with your statement, there is something to it. I remember when the Wal opened up in Lawrenceburg a couple of years ago. I read an interview with a couple of locals in the paper who took off from work for the big opening, stating something along the line that they wouldnt miss it for anything. I can also recall a soundbite I heard somewhere with a gal saying she was glad Dollar General was opening, saying now she wouldnt have to dress up to go to the store like she did when going to Wall mart.

I love it when my home town comes up on here. Twice in one week!!! Growing up in Lawrenceburg I can say this is 100% true. Up until that point the Wal-Mart was not a Super and the new one was a big deal. There is also something to Michelle's argument about the lack of anything to do in a small town. In Lawrenceburg there was nothing to do. Nothing. The place doesn't even have a community pool now. The new Wal Mart was seen as a big step up for the tiny burg, and from a practical standpoint offered convenience the town had never seen. With all that said I hate Wal Mart and regret every time I step in one. Target all the way!

"ayr-way"....which developed from the old L.S. Ayers, based out of Indianapolis.....ayr-way was later acquired by Dayton-Hudson and morphed into Target...

...I have no preference for one over the other, but Wal-Mart is in Oldham County and Target isn't, so Wal-Mart is where I go....yes, I am occasionally swayed by expedience vs. principle.

I remember it well...another discount chain that sputtered out of business around 1990 -- TJ Maxx is an off-shoot of Zayre's.

Alas, Woolworth's went out of business here in the US a few years ago, at least from what I have read, and just a month or two ago the last one closed in the UK. :(
I was in upstae NY not too long ago and ran into a Ben Franklin which I thought were dead too.

Was there ever an EJ Korvetts in Louisville? I remember it from all the places I lived as a teen.

Ok here I go...(big breath) I have to say that while on the moral level I dislike WalMart's practices, there are a lot of good memories for me there. Some of the best times I had with my mother were when she would take me to WalMart on a late night shopping expedition (given that I didn't have school the next day), so there are times where I have to get a WalMart fix in, if anything else just to make me smile at what she would have said about various items. Other than that though I do have to agree that from a philosophical standpoint I do fall in line with liking Target more in terms of quality and community give backs. But some of the clearance sales at WalMart do have their own appeal, I recently filled my car with left over Christmas decorations for next year's projects at almost next to nothing...
