Michael Sell wrote:Regarding the logo and "...Eccentric Observer," there's nothing eccentric about the LEO. It's a regular alt-weekly, with some excellent columns/pieces and some subpar ones. Compared to the Courier Journal, sure they're eccentric, but compared to the CJ even the weekly car guide you pick up at Kroger's is eccentric. No sense in keeping a silly logo for an out of whack title, and I'm glad they didn't.

I was in Indy last week and they have 2 papers that equal what we have here, sorry to say. I saw the exact same thing there as we have here. A local paper run by Gannett and some sort of a local paper run by a company NOT in Indy. Their indie paper is very similar to ours. I believe our LEO is not locallly owned and if I am incorrect please call me out. I have been visiting a lot of large cities lately and we are definitely falling behind as far as the local newpapers go.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

LEO was bought by a Nashville-based company last year, Southcomm.

With the moribund state of the newspaper industry, we should be happy what we've got. Okay, not really, I'm not the kinda person to ever believe that, but yeah, things are not going to get any better anytime soon. That LEO is taking risks and staying focused on the quality of its content is a pretty rare thing in the industry these days. Thanks to Gannett, the C-J lost any claim to doing the latter long before these rough times for journalism.

If you want "eccentric" these days, you need to hit the various local websites that discuss local politics, music, culture, etc. Most of these sprang up over the last couple years.

That said, I am content with most of the changes being made with the LEO. It's kind of a sign of permanence.

All very interesting posts. But just out of curiosity, I wonder how one actually does define "eccentric" in terms of a newspaper? Is it a relative term or is the quality of eccentricity intrinsic?

Well, they've dropped their movie listings, so for the first time in 19 years, they made a change that really upsets me. Guess I can stop my Wednesday lunchtime ritual of finding the new LEO to see what movies are coming to town next weekend. Don't tell me I can figure this out for myself by getting bits and pieces from multiple websites. It's not quite as convenient. Why keep printing Video Tapeworm or the other movie related features if you're going to drop the most basic chunk of information movie lovers need?

Don't worry JR it's only pulled when we desperately need space, a last resort sort of thing. It's always on our web site too.
