The right tongs. I grab for my favorite one all the time and cant find a replacement for them anywhere. I have 3 others that just dont do the job properly.

Lets face it folks though..in these times the best Christmas gift for foodies is friends and setting time aside to break bread with them.

Enjoy the moments.

Best to all,

There are some goodie bargains to be had still at Linens and Things. I just picked up a digital scale (I love them, mine broke) for $25. silpats for $12 and a bunch of other stuff. I'm sure you could find something there. I find it is best to go on a weekday- the hoards are there on the weekends and evenings.
As the time nears for their closing I'm sure things will go down more (I know price wasn't mentioned in the question- but a bargain is a bargain). The one item they seems to be terribly overstocked with is chafing dishes. It looks to me like they will be paying people to take them away in a couple weeks.

You might check the website http://www.onegoodie.com daily. It happens to be locally owned and they post only one item a day until it sells out. So far I have seen a really cool cookbook holder that would make a great foodie gift - also some hot sauces, etc. There's one side for foodie goodies and another side for mommy goodies. Really neat concept and some great stuff to be found.

My family, with 2 of us unemployed (me included), have agreed to not give gifts this year. For the more fortunate of you, I would think a gift card from Campbell's Gourmet Cottage would be awesome. A great place and a local presence. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Please remember what you have to be thankful for.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.

How about a gift of that California Christmas Classic...A box of See's Candies...

I believe that you can purchase See's Candies at Mall St. Matthews during the holiday shopping period...

Gary, I just tried onegoodie.com, and I had an issue as well. Perhaps they are having some technical issues. Keep trying, they have some great stuff and it's deeply discounted!

FYI:
Creation Gardens sells this same tool kit (not sure how much though)

Anyone who is even thinking about purchasing anything like this... please PM me, I can help you source the contents for much cheaper. (And basic instructions as well!)

It should be noted though that this kit will contains items that will only do spherification (normal and inverse) - nothing more.

The only pricy component is the caviar maker which alone can be sourced from Chef Rubber for $37.
And isn't really even necessary unless you are doing some serious volume caviar making.
I've always used squeeze bottles for service.

The industrial additives can be found online for much less. (and I can direct you to the cheapest retail sources for each)
The other contents can be found for next to nothing at pharmacies or kitchen supply stores.

A gram scale accurate to 1/10 of a gram is a recommended accompaniment to such a kit as well.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Inexpensive things I can't live without:

Silpats
Microplanes
Y-Peelers (i know this can be debated, but some things are a pain in the ass to peel with a straight peeler - asparagus for example. A Y-peeler makes this a breeze)
Tweezer Tongs (i know this may sound silly but they are tons more delicate on food, and no where near as clumsy... and they're cheap)
Curved extra fine tip tweezers may be a nice gift for your detail-obsessive, OCD chef friends.

Hell, just start poking around JBPrince and you're bound to find something.

No, no, my friends, the peeler of choice is this one, manufactured by Zyliss. I have already had one given to me as a gift this season, and it's amazing. You can even peel soft peaches and tomatoes perfectly with this thing (the blade is serrated, and SHARP - watch out!)

Also, Linens and Things in Shelbyville Rd Plaza is going out of business and they carry them. You'll never buy any other kind of peeler. Mine's red
