Anybody seen the new dollar coin?

Robin, have you taken that pic yet? I am quite curious to see your coin. It is possible the bank sent out a fake as a promo.

Not yet ... I've got the project cued up, but was waiting for sunlight ... to get the most accurate color, I'm looking for a sunny day.

That being said, however, on very close inspection I think it is in fact "golden." When I first looked at it it seemed to be aluminum color, but when I put it down next to a quarter it does have a very light golden hue.

And I really and truly do not think Eclipse Bank sent out a replica. In the first place, the accompanying material says it's a real dollar. Second, I don't think the Treasury Department makes an exception for promotions when it criminalizes counterfeiting, i.e., the production of an exact replica of U.S. currency.

I think I was just expecting a more GOLD "golden."

I'll still take and post a pic, if the sun ever comes out again.

As the coin dude I am, I look forward to it. That said, our currency system is screwed. The US is so stuck in the past. I wish we could move forward, on soooooooooo many levels.

Is there any way for you to post a pic of the coin you're mentioning here? I have to agree the Washington example of the presidential coins series is horrible, but it should have a definite golden color to it. If you've ever seen the Sacagawea dollar coin, it should look like that. They are supposed to be made of the same metallic alloy. Some error coins in the presidential series have arisen, but be aware some of them are fakes.

Of course! I'll shoot a digital photo of it tomorrow by daylight and post it. It's definitely aluminum/silver, though, not "golden." If it's a fake, the folks at Eclipse Bank are going to be looking pretty embarrassed, since they sent it out to me!

In other news. I have a quarter here that is from 1958, and I noticed that it didn't sound right as it jingled with the other coins. What is different about this quarter vs the current ones? It feels slightly lighter too. Maybe more aluminum?

That is most likely because your quarter is 90% silver. Nowadays, they don't use silver in coins for general circulation. Let's hook up next week. I'm just down the road from you. Let me know when.

Yep, it's the real thing all right ... but the color is not as "gold" as that. More like aluminum with a light sun tan.

That commemorative coin is a 90% gold alloy with approximately 1/4 of an ounce of gold in it. At most, only 100,000 will be minted, so expect the value to increase on the 3rd party marketplace. Gold is always a good investement, be it bullion or coinage.

Oops, sorry! I took a couple of shots with my expensive Nikon but wasn't happy with the results. (No macro lens.) Let me try again with a different camera (the still-image function on my mini-vidcam) and see if I can get a better image.

Okay, here we go! I still needed to run it through PhotoShop to get minimal color correction, but this is about as close as we're going to get in a quick hack job. Pictured surrounding the "golden dollar" are a modern (non-silver) US quarter, a 1 Euro coin, "silver" with a "golden" rim, and below, a Euro cent, which I believe still has just a bit of real copper in the cladding.

Being as the dollar isn't a gold coin, it looks a lot golder than I was expecting based on what you'd been posting here. It sure is an ugly looking coin. I am not at all impressed with the design of good ol' George. If he were here to see it, he more than likely head out to his still or the hemp fields.
