I'm going to come right out and say it: Cunningham's - both downtown and on the river - have slipped a lot in recent years. It's hard to get past friendly nostalgia when we dine at these current incarnations of the old landmark, but I always leave feeling vaguely like I've been taken advantage of.

Captain's Quarters for the best riverside experience, or if you must, one of the many eateries across the river from downtown Louisville, for the view if not for the fare.

Eateries in general, Mayan Cafe is a good pick because it shows an unexpected side of Louisville. Corbett's because of its high quality and pretty location in the midst of bland suburbia. Seviche because it is also an unusual ethnic approach - creative, pan-American Nuevo Latino, and because it is so crazy good. And maybe 610 Magnolia because even a Londoner would have to be impressed. Or L&N Wine Bar for a neat combination of great wine selection, a warm and comfortable setting in a historic Clifton farmhouse, and exceptional American bistro fare. Palermo Viejo, maybe? It's incredibly hard to recommend top Louisville eateries to a visitor who's only here for a short stay, because we have so many!

Old Frankfort Pike has a great view. Beware thou... In Fayette Co., if the sign says 15mph on a curve, do 5... Also I've gone airborne on some of the hill crests at 55mph...

I used to go between Lex and Lou taking Versailles to Lawrenceburg, Little Mt. up rt 44 to Sheperdsville then to D'Ville for the same reason.

The interstate highways are fine to get from A to B quickly but you miss so much. I would have never found small delightful places like the Depot in Midway nor Logan's of Midway with Maurice (sp?) the lad who knew me on a first name basis and already knew what I wanted to buy (excellent gentleman), that little country store at Little Mount plus many others...

Hey JP, I live right by Little Mount, are you by chance thinking of Carriss's Grocery right up the road in Southville? They are pretty well known(in our area) for the lunch specials. From what I understand they are one of the oldest grocery's in the state that still serves lunch. Cool place with alot of history.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I'm not certain for it has been 20 years since I've been there. It was near 127 just up a small hill on the north side as I was going west on 44.

Jeff, I lived there for a year, had an apartment in Aberdeen,OH.
Do not know if you remember the Lively Lady floating restaurant and bar on the Ohio side of the river but I went there occasionally by boat, went to the Moose Lodge in Maysville also. The AA Highway was just being built when I moved back to Louisville.
There was another restaurant on Rosemary Clooney Blvd. I cannot think of right now also ?

I totally agree with Schmipf's. It is one of the hidden gems of our community. Check it out: http://www.schimpffs.com/

Additionally,
Lunch is served from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm M-F and 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Sat. and includes soup, sandwiches and homemade pies. Schimpff's old-fashioned soda fountain serves traditional malts, milk shakes, sundaes, and sodas, as well as old-time favorites, such as cherry and chocolate Cokes.

The egg salad is the best and, oh, those strawberry sodas.

The "World's Largest Bottle of Booze(Bourbon)" is also in Louisville. Might make for a quick photo op.

Ali Center!

He is extremely well-known worldwide, and from our little city. He's gotta be the most famous person born and raised here. I send all tourists there.

I am about the same age as Ali. I have always liked and respected him, both professionally and personaly. My son was in town and wanted to see the museum. We spent one of the most boring afternoons. Neat building, but that's about it.

Suggest you send folks to the Frazier museum. Much better.

Dohhhhh! I said Cunninhams but I MENT Mike Linnings. And I agree with you Robin, I see no reason to go out of my way for Cunninghams.

As far as the Fraizer, I love it but my favorite part is the 3rd floor with the exhibits from the Royal Armoury in the UK. Rhys has seen all of those exhibits a dozen times over already before they made their way over here so, maybe not Fraizer for him. He might enjoy the Ali Museum so, another good suggestion.
