Anyone shopping on "Black Friday"

by Steve P » Fri Nov 20, 2009 12:58 pm

So is anyone planning on braving the crowds on "Black Friday" ? We tend to do the majority of our holiday shopping online and avoid the madness...but some folks seem to thrive on the thrill of the kill (which in the case of Walmart last year is stated literally).

To show you how "duh" I am, I always thought "Black Friday" meant something ominous. Recently my daughter, the clothing store manager, told me that, no...it's the day when (in theory) most retail stores get "in the black" for the year.

They haven't invented a "bargain" that will get me out in that mess. I thought after someone died last year, Black Friday would be scaled down a bit; but I guess I once again overestimated humanity.

No shopping for me. But I'll be selling coffee and tea to thirsty shoppers on Bardstown Rd. Also, bags of coffee and gift cards. As I like to say, "Give the gift of coffee!" It is typically a pretty good day for us...

No way in hell. Typically, the stores only have 4 or 5 items of the really good deals on hand. They just want to get people in the store. So, that $99 wii you're getting to the store at 3 am for? Unless you're one of the 4 or 5 people who get their hands on the item, you ain't leaving with it. I haven't seen ANYTHING I would go stand outside of a store, all night, in the freezing cold for. No thanks!

I LOVE going on Friday when I'm with my sister. But since they're in AZ, I doubt I'll be going. 2 yrs in a row I walked in Kohl's, saw the lines, and promptly walked back out. I dont know why i even tried.

No...but I know people who have done it for years and enjoy the "hustle and bustle" of the holiday crowds...but getting up a a pre-dawn hour, regardless of the weather, and rushing to stand in line with hundreds of other people on a similar mission is for either insomniacs or Marines.

It's easy to overestimate corporate retail CEOs. I wouldn't paint all of humanity as having the same mentality.

Corporations have a fiduciary responsibility to maximize profits. Thus, they legally need to do so. This fact is one of the reasons they shouldn't be running our health care industry. It is also a reason why they (the Corporations) shouldn't have the same rights as humans. The CEOs are just doing their jobs.

See the movie "The Corporation" for more information (easily available on DVD).

Read an article that some shoppers at a Toys R Us in Indianapolis got into an altercation early this morning over the possessory rights to a toy hamster named "Zhu Zhu Pets"...police were summoned to the scene...let the holiday season begin.

Had to run down to Lowe's to pick up some more Christmas lights, took the opportunity to swing by the L.B. and pick up some beer...The traffic around Springhurst wasn't exactly crazy but the Kohl's and Target parking lots were pretty darn full.

Glad we're spending the day putting up the tree rather than fighting those crowds.
