CJ littering nabes with unwanted free papers?

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 12, 2008 10:46 am

Okay, you could call this another anti-Gannett rant by one of the bitterest of the many bitter folks in our town who lived through the sale of the newspapers to Gannett and then bailed out rather than work for one of the most mendacious companies in media. Ahem. But I think this one's legit:

It appears that the CJ on Wednesdays has recently begun tossing out copies of its "Neighborhoods" section, sheathed in ugly pastel pink or green plastic bags, to every household that does not subscribe to the daily paper. And worse, the low-wage workers they hire to do the distribution are making no effort to get them up onto peoples' porches or even their yards. They just flip them onto the easement between the sidewalk and the street, where they generally lie until they rot or until a good neighbor picks them up and ****-cans them. The folks inside the house, not expecting this unsolicited freebie, generally have no idea it's there.

Why, it's just like spam, but spam that uglifies the neighborhood. Thanks a lot, Gannett!

It's terrible Robin, out here in the rural part of the county they just toss them on the end on the drive.

You can tell who is out of town as they will multiply over weeks. Which, is another issue with them besides being lawn spam.

The amount of paper "spam" that fills the newspaper bin below my mailbox really bothers me when I go out of town. Like many other forumites, I do not subscribe to the CJ but I get loads of spam from the local carrier. At Christmas time, he even left me a candy bar along with his name and address so I could get his Christmas tip to him.

Even the wilds of Oldham County are not immune to CJ detritus. Without county wide recycling I have been forced to throw 'em in with my old NY Times and cart 'em into town for recycling.

They still call me once a month to see if I'll resubscribe. If I'm interested in ANYTHING the cj has to offer, I'll look at it online. For FREE. And yes, my neighborhood is littered with lawn spam, as well.

We (me in clifton and my boss in cherokee triangle) were getting the ones in the pink bags weekly, but it was just advertising - no real section of the paper. If you email the subscription dept (I think that is the right dept) and give them your address and ask them to stop - they will! Ours stopped the same week!

That stops YOURS, but it doesn't clean up the neighborhood. I get the impression that a lot of people - even in "nice" city neighborhoods - don't notice them out there by the street and just leave them to rot.

Meanwhile, I've been getting a weekly DIGITAL copy of Neighborhoods in Email for the past month or so, a treat that's apparently reserved for advertisers. Since I am not an advertiser and never will be (why should I, when my own Website has larger circulation than their newspaper?), I don't know why they put me on this list, unless it's an evil joke meant to kick up my blood pressure and give me a stroke. Anyway, I've tried to get off that spam list without success - first, the unsubscribe link was broken, and more recently it has been ignored. And yest, that makes it spam by federal definition under the CAN-SPAM act, as weak as it may be.

I've seen both colors on our street, and the green definitely hold the neighborhoods section. Now that I think about it, I haven't inspected the pink, just ASSumed that it was the same thing.

the complex I live in has the apartments in blocks of 8 apartments to a building, and there are routinely 30-40 of these sections under our mailbox. so I guess they think not only are we reading them, but we need 1 per person per day. I complained to the complex management, and they complained to the CJ, and it stopped for a week, but then this week they were back.

I wonder if the CJ's advertising sales people count all those bags when they tell potential advertisers how many readers their hefty payment will reach.

Any of you restaurant types out there who are still paying real money to advertise in the CJ and wonder why it isn't helping might wish to think about this.

Yes ... this makes my blood boil, Robin. I sent a note to the circulation dept. and am still receiving their trash. I cannot believe they are allowed to TRASH neighborhoods like this and then we are the ones to clean up after them. Isn't their a fine for littering?

Well, with all the carriers busy delivering trash that must be why I'm not getting my NY times. I was informed that starting on 8/18 my NYT would be distributed and delivered through the CJ organization. I have missed at least one paper, if not two, every week subsequently.Of course the people at CJ, when I can get a person, know nothing about it.

Jimmy crack corn! I was wondering what had happened to the NY Times delivery lately. Didn't get a paper Wednesday and then got just 2 sections of the Wednesday paper and all of Thursday editions on Thursday. They have also hashed my bill so badly that I'm not sure what I owe.

Yeah, we get the Sunday NYT at home, and I was shocked ... shocked ... to learn that such an august institution was willing to sully its reputation by making a business deal with Gannett.

We haven't actually missed a Sunday Times yet, but the CJ guy comes around about an hour or two later than the Times guy did. (The Times guy was apparently summarily tossed out of his job when the CJ took the contract, as well.)
