The National Jug Band Jubilee cordially invites you to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of Louisville jug blower Earl McDonald (1885-1949)
Earl McDonald led the Ballard Chefs' weekly performances on Louisville's WHAS radio for three years (1929-1932). Public response exceeded expectations, enhancing the popularity of jug band music throughout the eastern half of the United States. Earl McDonald’s voice and the rhythm of his jug blowing enlivened the recordings of more than 40 tunes with a half-dozen bands from 1924 to 1931. In addition to his Original Louisville Jug Band, those bands included Louisville Jug Band, Sara Martin’s Jug Band, Clifford’s Louisville Jug Band, Old Southern Jug Band as well as the Dixieland Jug Blowers.
Friday, September 18th at 2:00 pm: Until now, Earl McDonald has been buried in an unmarked grave in Louisville Cemetery. Join us as we unveil a new custom black granite headstone at Earl’s graveside. We will have a short ceremony, as well as some acoustic Jug Band music provided by “The Old Southern Jug Blowers” who will be playing a few of Earl’s songs. Louisville Cemetery is located on Poplar Level Road, at the corner of Eastern Pkwy.
Saturday, September 19th at noon: The 2009 National Jug Band Jubilee kicks off at noon when we unveil a Historical Highway Marker honoring Earl McDonald. This takes place inside of the Brown-Forman Amphitheater at Waterfront Park.
