Any other 91.9 WFPK addicts?

by Brian Taylor Clark » Fri Feb 20, 2009 9:10 am

I confess, I am an addict. I try listening to commercial radio and I just can't stand it. I really enjoyed Scott Mullins (sp?) before he left, but feel right at home with Laura, Matt, Marian, Duke etc. I have been turned on to so many new artists, especially international, because of them. Just like supporting local restaurants, 91.9 always gets my money during their fundraisers. They even played Sir Mix A Lot during "after lunch" for my donation!!!

What are your favorite programs? Mine in no particular order...

Friday night sound clash with Matt Anthony
After lunch with Marian on Fridays after live lunch
Putumayo World Music spotlight,
5' o' clock shadow

Friday Night Sound Clash with Matt Anthony is the main reason I love fpk so much. It's the only show that I consistently love. He exposed me to M.I.A., for which I'm eternally grateful!

I'm happy with all three Public Radio Partnership stations and hate to call favorites, but certainly FPK has the most unique local character and personality. (No offense to FPL and UOL, but they're basically public-radio talk and all-classical.) I didn't know about the Putumayo hour, but I have a bunch of their CDs and really love world music. When's it on?

Robin, it's not actually putumayo hour, but shortly before or after 10:00 am M-F they feature a single song during the programming hour.

Oh. There goes the CD budget that I was going to switch into food. :D

Still, I hadn't noticed that, and will listen more closely hereafter. Thanks, Brian.

Does anyone remember way back (Summer of 2000) when Dan and Stacy let those wacky interns have their own show on Sunday nights? Oh wait, that was me! Sorry, shameless plug..

All jokes aside, we are really lucky to have such amazing public radio stations to choose from in Louisville. When I lived in Johnson City, TN, their public radio station was classical only with some bluegrass on the weekends. Not a bad thing, but I love the ecclectic mx that WFPK in particular provides.

We are fortunate to have this station here...My radio never moves from 91.9 ever.

And to their credit that is all the claim to be.

I will admit to still being mad at WFPK for the loss of jazz programming. They started cutting it with the death of my dear friend Phil Bailey and continued cutting until Sunday offers the only jazz on the station.

If you haven't heard it, though, be sure to check out my friend John La Barbera's big band/large ensemble jazz show on Sunday morning at 10AM. We're really fortunate to have a local (UofL prof) Grammy-nominated composer produce a local show of great big band music.

That's wild, I thought it was the best decision they've made. Not too cut it back as far as they have, but to not play it M-F after 12PM. I remember working at the Louisville Ballet scene shop eight years ago and literally falling asleep after lunch time listening to jazz. I think they have increased listenership significantly since that switch. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy jazz, just not enough to listen to it in four hour blocks everyday after lunch during the work day

Brian...if you claim to have fallen asleep listening to jazz -- it couldn't have been jazz (LOL)...

WFPK is a great departure from most of the nonsense on commercial radio, but I was sorry when they (and WFPL) reduced their jazz format...I listen to them w/o fail on Sundays, when they broadcast Big Band and jazz all day, and enjoy their Country/Bluegrass selections later in the evening....the rest of the week, I'll catch them off and on (I'm the guy in town usually listening to WUOL)

I agree, TP, and meant no criticism by this remark. I only sought to position WFPK as the one of the three that has more "unique," characteristic programming that you won't find just anywhere on the FM dial.

Agree completely. I've never been a fan of the "AAA" format (and I'm not sure what FPK does is truly AAA, anyway) so I really don't listen to it any longer except for the Sunday jazz, and then usually just the morning hours.

I've been lstening to FPK from the begining. Yes, the format has changed dramatically and I think for the better. I loved Phil Bailey, but I too found myself falling asleep (or,gasp! switching to New Albany) when the jazz was four hours long. I certainly think incorporating more jazz into the programing mix would be a good thing. I haven't beenable to catch it for a while, but does Woody Chancy still do the gospel hour on Sunday morning (maybe the 5 - 6am time slot)? Love Woody! Miss Scott, Laura Shine has always been a fav and who could count out the "Country Gentleman" LOL
