"Life, Liberty ..." at the Speed

by TP Lowe » Sun Nov 02, 2008 9:07 am

Here is a link to some basic info on a wonderful show at the Speed Museum: "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art From the Yale University Art Gallery." This show is the first time that the Yale gallery has allowed a large part of their collection to tour. If you are a history and/or art fan, it's a must see!

I am so there! I am so excited about seeing anything by Trumbull.

Cool, Carla - there are at least six Trumbull's that I can recall.

Special deal - only $5 entry on election day. So, take Obama's vacation recommendation, vote and then see great American art!

Tuesday is a heavy day for me at work but that won't stop me from coming by another day. And $15 is still a deal.

I know what my Mom will be doing tomorrow! She has a George Washington obsession (OK - so it started with Barry Bostwick from that old miniseries) and she wanted to see this. Great offer - thanks Speed!

I cought this a few weeks ago and it is a wonderful show. I was dumbfounded by some of the furniture especially- as good as any American furniture I've seen anywhere.
I will be back for a second and third go around.

From Diane Heilenman's CJ blog:

Yale show tickets reduced
Tickets to the great Yale University show of Americana at the Speed Art Museum have been reduced. They are now $5 instead of $7 for members and $10 instead of $15 for non-members. If you have not been, go. It is not just all old stuff, although there is some fabulous stuff from storied names, like Paul Revere (Yes, the real cartoonist, silversmith and night rider). The goodies run well into the late 19th century with an unbelievable photograph of the moon's surface in 1864 and a very amusing Eadweard Muybridge bit of, we hope, unintentional misogyny with his motion study of a woman dressed in a diaphonous toga throwing a ball most apathetically, as we used to say, "like a girl."

Just saw the exhibit yesterday. It was awesome. I'm so very happy it's going to be there throughout Dec as well. I know I'll go back to catch what I may have overlooked.

We went to this over a break between Christmas and New Years Day. Excellent - we spent over three hours there. The show has been held over until January 18.

We've been making a habit over the last few years to visit each new exhibition at the Speed. What's next, TP?

This show was a pretty big "bite," economically speaking, as you might imagine. Nothing this large for awhile. But we do have a couple of surprises in store, and I'll certainly post them here as they get announced.
