Downtown’s S. Fourth Street gets a new Live Nation club

At a press conference today, Mayor Fischer welcomed Live Nation executives in announcing the opening of a new, 900-capacity live music and events space at 611 S. Fourth Street, on the same block as the Louisville Palace (also run by Live Nation, with a capacity of almost 3,000) and WFPK.

Though the club is promoted on press materials as “House of Blues Entertainment’s electrifying new live music venue,” it is not planning to be named “House of Blues Louisville,” even though HoB is a Live Nation property with much name recognition around the country. The venue has an opening planned for spring 2014. A social media contest might determine the eventual name of the venue inside the Wright Taylor Building, which was built in 1928.

The operators plan for the venue to be two stories “showcasing the nation’s premier touring artists, and will also host special events.” Mayor Fischer commented, “It’s happening, man. It’s good, it’s awesome,” about the venue and other area revitalization developments.

At the corner, where Chestnut meets Fourth Street, a new “Happy Birthday Park” will open, named in tribute to sisters Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill, the Louisville-born and born composers of the ubiquitous anthem.

The centerpiece of the growth will be the eight-floor, 162 room Hilton Garden Inn, scheduled to open in fall 2014. Most enjoyably, the hotel will feature a rooftop bar and restaurant. On the second and fourth floors, the hotel will connect to the Henry Clay Building, providing even more meeting and events space for conventions, conferences and other guests of the city.

Mayor Fischer added, “We like keeping it local. We like keeping it weird,” though it seems like the upcoming 900-capacity music room might have to fight the completely locally-owned and run Headliners Music Hall, whose capacity is 700, for acts.

And this actually could start to turn that "dead stretch" between the Palace and the Seelbach around. Certainly worth a shot!

Huh. With the Wright-Taylor building to one side and the parking garage to the other, I wouldn't have thought there would be enough room on that corner for both the hotel AND a park. I guess it'll be a pretty small park.

new venue is christened The Mercury Ballroom and now has a growing schedule of music. Sister venue to the Palace. Owned by Live Nation it seems.
