Dear Toast on Market

by Leah S » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:20 am

You have lost my future business. Having invited 5 other people to a breakfast meeting, I arrived early to secure a table. The host required me to wait in the waiting area until ALL of my party arrived before he would agree to push together two tables and arrange chairs for our seating. Never mind that I was juggling lots of papers getting ready for the meeting. Also, there was no offer of coffee while I waited. Nor as the other people began arriving was there an offer of pre-seating coffee.

Another group was left to cool their heels in the waiting area also.

The restaurant was 75% empty when I arrived. It did not completely fill while we were there. Yes I know it's a small space, but if my party doesn't show and you need to take back the extra table, then do that.

Putting your needs ahead of the customer's is not what I call good customer service.

My group regularly meets at Wild Eggs. Not one of us wants to visit T on M again.

The Bodega at Felice was just up the street. I like T on M but they get extremely busy quickly so maybe they were guarding an onslaught. Maybe they should have seated you on a smaller table and held on another to tag on to it.

Not all invited to a party show...

I love wild eggs! We went in there the other Sunday afternoon and arrived 7 minutes before their posted closing time and they treated us like we walked in 2 hours before closing. Awesome customer service.
I honestly never really understood why Toast was so busy, every bit of food I've ever eaten there has been mediocre. We stopped going there for breakfast brunch more than a year ago.

We have stopped going to Toast also. I always thought the food was good, but the wait was unbearable at times, and we also have had experiences like Leah's. Like, a party of 4, 3 of us were there, and they wouldn't seat us. Which makes no sense considering the table-top would be the same regardless. Also, we always found the hostesses to be on haughty side and the service a bit brusque.

It's been a year or two since our last visit; too bad things haven't improved.

I've always enjoyed Toast on Market's food and service. Did you say anything to the Manager on duty?

Also - once we did call-ahead, which they did at the time, told us it would be 30 minutes, we arrived within 15, and proceeded to wait an hour.

I prefer the Toast in New Albany to the one in Louisville. Completely different waitstaff attitudes and imo, the food is better. Of course, that may be from their congenial attitude.

I went to Lynn's for breakfast monday morning, while the food was okay, the service was very subpar. While they were training new staff, the place was less than half full so I don't find training to be much of an excuse for service being so slow. If I'm going to spend $50 on breakfast for two I'd expect decent service. When we mentioned the problems to the girls at the hostess stand, they acted like our complaints were an inconvenience to them, I thought no refills, slow service and the nearly two hours lost was an inconvenience to me. We had requested a manager through another server since ours was MIA, but no one ever came to the table. :x We won't be back to Lynn's.

Sounds like I can cross Toast off my list too...I've heard several other complaints and variable food reviews...I'd don't have enough money to waste on another potentially bad experience.

Keep meaning to go check out Wild Eggs, really wish I had remembered them first! Think I'll make that my destination dining this weekend...

Would someone...and I really am being serious...explain the reason they stop dining at a particular establishment because of a bad experience from another person's visit?

I'm not speaking of anyone in particular, it's just I tend to hear this more often than not. I understand a reason if it's truly horrible, but have heard people no longer going to places they use to frequent because a friend had poor service one night. Is it selfish to still dine at a place other people shun because they believe it's sub-par? Or, is it just personal taste?

Make any sense?

I think that in some cases word of mouth is a good enough reason to not dine at a restaurant. In my opinion someone else getting poor service is not enough for me to skip a particular establishment. Poor service or good service for that matter can be volatile.

I have dined at Toast on Market in New Albany twice since they've opened and found both experiences to be very good. The food has been good and there has alway been a minimal or no wait at all, including when we went on Easter Sunday.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I love Toast on Market. Every time my wife, my son and I have gone there, they have gone out of their way to take care of us. They've brought complimentary fruit to keep our son happy while waiting for our food, everyone has been very courteous and we've had nothing but great experiences there. Oh, and the food has been consistently fantastic.Granted, we usually go for a late lunch so maybe the crowd isn't anywhere near what they get at breakfast so I can't speak to that.

I'm sorry to hear that people have had bad experiences but I've never had one there. Just felt this thread might need a little balance, that's all.

I have never had a bad experience at Toast on Market, either. The service has always been more than congenial and the food has always been delicious. Not that this addresses Leah's beef, but - we don't ever go during the extremely busy times, so that saves us some angst. I drive by there a lot and see tons of people waiting outside, so that's deterrent enough for going during high-traffic times. Breakfast is something I don't like to wait for, typically, because I'm cranky enough in the morning, so we go when there is a really good chance of getting seated quickly.

My wife and I do not like waiting. So, reviews about only sitting complete parties and long waits are enough to keep us away. Life is too short to be waiting or cooling your heals when there are empty tables.

That's probably the major reasons most people come to this forum. They want to see other peoples opinions whether they be good or bad to help them decide where to go out to eat. We respect the opinions of others as we hope they respect ours when it comes to making decisions about dining.

We eat at Toast quite often. I have no complaints about their food or the service. However, it is irritating that they won't see partial parties--I've run into that more than once. That's their rule though and they do it to everyone, no matter how large or small the party. We take advantage of that time to catch up with our friends or walk across to Scout and the other surrounding shops.
