louisville restaurant community

by Andrew Hutto » Wed Mar 24, 2010 1:29 am

just figured that while i was being sappy, i might as well promote/ honor all of the restaurant owners who participate in the Taste of the Derby Festival to benefit Dare to Care Food Bank. there is a place just a tad south of central that is having an event that is named too damn close for it to be????
if you have not donated to dare to care, but want to... call me and i will give you the tour... or better yet, volunteer to serve food at one of the 15 kids cafe's or be a part of the backpack buddy program...
sorry for the shameless plug... but... there are very few place's that will give you the ultimate feel good moment about your donation than Dare to Care Food Bank. from the warehouse sending out 12 million pounds of food last year (every year),to the guys in said warehouse that make it work... the staff (only 5% of the total operating cost goes to pay them), i have been on the board of d.t.c. for 8 years, and have been to so many events for .d.t.c. that it really does not matter...
my 'job' as a board member is to step up and serve.. let me know what you l.h.b. guys can do!!!!

Andrew! I personally don't consider that a shameless plug, rather a community info sort of thing and I thank you for it. The LHB community has always shown itself to be a compassionate group and pretty pro-active. Perhaps if you supplied the board with a little more info... :)

Dare to Care's Backpack program is so important. There are four kids in my class that receive the bags of food. These are kids that rarely bring back their homework, but they always get that food home because they're probably starving.

jessica, dare to care was founded nearly forty years ago because a young boy, in louisville, died of starvation on thanksgiving day. the newspaper article ( from louisville times ) hangs in dare to care's boardroom. i read it almost every time i am out there. thanks for the kind words about the backpack program!

hey guys, just an update on this years TASTE of the DERBY FESTIVAL... sorry for the caps, but... these restaurants are confirmed and are participating in this event to benefit dare to care food bank.
asiatique, august moon, baxter station, the bristol bar and grille, bluegrass brewing co. bonefish grill, bourbon's bistro, cafe lou lou, corbett's, an american place, cumberland brews, el mundo, homemade ice cream and pie kitchen, intermezzo cabaaret & cafe, jack fry's, jeff ruby's, limestone, martini italian bistro, mayan cafe, north end cafe, p.f.chang's, palermo viejo, rivue, science hill inn, shuckman's fish market, seviche, the irish rover, the oakroom, the sweet tooth, tequila factory, white oak @ the artemesia gallery....i am waiting on paper work from many other louisville originals.
there are too many beverage companies to list... but, we have bourbon, wine, beer to your hearts content.
there are no tickets sold day of the event so get them early by calling dare to care at 966-3821.
tickets are $75.00 and i think that 60% of that is good for a tax write off.
dine your way through the 'ville from 5:30 to 8:30 april 22nd...

No problem, Andrew. This is a major event, and Hotbytes is delighted to help support it. You really ought to contact me privately about getting some PSA space.

I was talking more about something to run alonside the TASTE OF DERBY banner ads you'll see randomly floating across the top of the page, Andrew. We'll need to have some communication about that ... a press release alone probably won't give us what we need for that.

I really and truly wanted to let both Taste events have equal publicity. :)

Probably the wrong thread - but, me finds it a bit petty that YUM brand feels it advantageous to latch on w/ the name of a well established Derby event for their inaugural derby food function. Guess they figure that YUM brand now owns any event referring to The Derby.
Legally, they are probably right.
Ethically they B wrong

Mark, being involved in a way with both events, I'd have to offer at least a weak defense for both.

Taste of Derby is a function of Kentucky Derby, a trademarked event. The name is a variation on Taste of NFL, the national event that it's modeled after.

Taste of Derby Festival is a function of Derby Festival, a separate trademarked event.

Both events benefit Dare to Care; if the Derby folks got Yum to pour in big bucks, I figure more power to them.

I don't believe anyone involved in management of either event views the other as a competitor. They have different approaches and serve different audiences. I hope they both raise a lot of money to support their worthy causes and bring attention to Louisville at a time when we're in the national spotlight.
